Yes, you can leave the cap on but loose to prevent bloating, this is exactly why I purchased this product. Yes it can be used on metal gas cans. I had previously purchased the plastic versions, to prevent bloating, but with an open HOLE, dust and small trash can enter. With this vent, nothing can get in but air when loosened. I think you'll be very satisfied.

Can these be used on the metal 5 gallon jerry cans?

Couldn't see why not. I would be concerned about metal chips getting into the tank. Might initially need center drill or starter drill prior to the provided kit drill.

Will these vent caps work with 4-gallon rotopax container which have quite thick walls?
