Pedro Almodóvar makes telephones, a mambo taxi, and a burning mattress into delirious plot points and indelible images in his international breakthrough, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Melding melodrama with screwball farce, this Academy Award nominated black comedy secured the auteur s place at the vanguard of modern Spanish cinema. Continuing Almodóvar s exploration of the female psyche, the film tells the story of Pepa, an actor played by the director s frequent collaborator Carmen Maura (Volver) who resolves to kill herself with a batch of sleeping-pill-laced gazpacho after her lover leaves her. Fortunately, she is interrupted by a string of visitors, setting in motion a deliciously chaotic series of events. The filmmaker channeled inspiration by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Douglas Sirk into his own unique vision, arriving at the irreverent sense of humor and vibrant visual sense that define his work today. With a sensational ensemble cast of early Almodóvar regulars that also includes Antonio Banderas (Evita) and Rossy de Palma (Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!), this film shows an artist in total control of his craft.DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES- New high-definition digital restoration, supervised by director Pedro Almodóvar and producer Agustín Almodóvar, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack- Alternate 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack- New interviews with director Pedro Almodóvar, actor Carmen Maura, and producer Agustín Almodóvar- New discussion by film scholar Richard Peña of the film s impact in Spain and abroad- Trailer- New English subtitle translation- PLUS: An essay by critic Elvira Lindo

An excellent film of subtle strength
I watched this film again after some years, and I am still struck by the artistry of the camera work. This film has also always had an instant comedic appeal for the absolute madcap moments and the bizarre story line that weaves the lives of three women and their crises together. Yet, after a number of viewings and the passage of time, I am more than ever struck by the subtle strength the lead character, Pepa, conveys in a world of machismo. I believe it takes several viewings, or perhaps a little bit more cultural knowledge of Spain than I had before, to understand how subtle this expression of strength and perseverance actually is. This is a sort of subtle protest film, not anything like an outspoken American feminist would create or expect. Instead this film is simple, sincere, and subtle. Under all that simple and wry hilarity is a deep expression of women truly struggling to express themselves, be themselves, and find themselves, in a male dominated society. I believe that it is an excellent film both men and women can appreciate and enjoy.

Great Movie
This is a classic. I first saw this when it first came out and I had to buy it as I loved it so much. I'm a huge Rosie de Palma fan and she doesn't disappoint, nor do the other actors and a very young Antonio Banderas. Muy Guapo

Holds up over time- still funny, beautiful camera work
It had been a long time since I watched this. There are so many camera perspectives and details I appreciated. It's one of Antonio Banderas's first roles. Also, an early role for Rossy De Palma. (I saw her recently in Amor de Mis Amores- priceless). Carmen Maura is excellent. This is an early Almodovar movie- more funny than the darkness of later work. A satisfying film experience. Worth buying just for the gazpacho scenes.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
I am so glad this movie was finally released in DVD formatfor U.S. audiences. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.I first saw it about 10 years ago and became an instant PedroAlmodovar and Carmen Maura fan. Carmen Maura is at the topof her game. She is such a great comedic actress. Thismovie is so funny, clever, witty, the writing is so good. You also see a young Antonio Banderas and an excellent cast.I can't stress enough how entertaining this movie is. You alsosee parts of Madrid, Spain which brought back memories for meof my trip there. I have been monitoring this movie's DVD releasefor U.S. audiences and FINALLY the day has come. It is my pleasureto say you will throughly enjoy this movie. It is so good. And sure enough I just ordered my copy. Another Almodovarfavorite of mine is HIGH HEELS. So funny, witty, entertaining. Can't wait for that one to also be released. Both are favorites.

Love it, but one complaint!
Love this movie! Probably my favorite by Pedro Almodovar, but I have one small complaint. The movie is described as being presented in widescreen, but while watching the opening credits, I couldn't help notice that the actors name were cut off on the left and right sides of the screen. Most annoying! So is this actually presented just in letterbox?

One of Almodovar's best film
Great comedy about women who've just had enough. Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas shine in their roles.

Best Almodovar movie
This is the best Almodovar movie and I'm so glad to find it in Spanish with subtitles. Showcases the beauty of Madrid and the talented cast especially the sparkling and iconic Carmen Maura.
