Love, love, love Barkbelly! Read this to my Year 3 class who simply adored it. We went on to read two more of Cat's books and do an author study.

Barkbelly and Snowbone are two tremendously rich books for all young readers to enjoy. The characters, world and story are sufficiently disturbing and magically-real to make young readers critically conscious of the social and political tensions in the story while also being able to identify similar parallel concerns and quirks within the their own real worlds. Discrimination, dehumanization, tenderness and compassionate solidarity are all wrapped in these two epic coming-of-age stories. The writing is outstanding, Weatherill is clearly a gifted and masterful storyteller. A joy to read out loud.
