An easy step up from R Markdown
If you are using R Markdown, the bookdown package is a very easy step up, and extremely useful for scientific papers as well as books. Among many other things, the package lets you number equations and handle references in a manner similar to LaTeX. I used Zotero and Better BibTex to make a couple of bib files, and used the output specification below in the YAML headers. The result was beautiful. Oh, yes, about the book. The writing is typical Yihui: clear, succinct and charmingly frank. I have a copy at work and a copy at home.output: bookdown::html_document2: self_contained: true theme: default # default, cerulean, journal, darkly are good toc: true toc_depth: 2 toc_float: true number_sections: truebibliography: ["geothermal.bib", "r.bib"]csl: apa-5th-edition.csllink-citations: yes

A good buy if you have extra cash
If you are starting to work with bookdown and if you have the extra cash this is a good buy. While the material basically matches the bookdown website, I found this to be exceptionally handy. I prefer to read paper and there is sa lot to be said for the ability to read on the train without having to worry about who is eying your tablet. I had used the bookdown website for a week or so before I gave in and got this. I read the book cover to cover going to and from work and now I use the website to search for keywords and then jump to the right section of the physical book. The book is thin for the price but the printing and binding are spot on.

Useful but too short
It contains useful information but not enough of it. Bookdown is powerful but any deviation from or addition to the structure of the sample book requires googling for more details and thinking like a coder rather than a writer. To be fully actionable, the book should be abolition four times its current size.

This small printed book is not worth buying. The online version is fully useful and updated.
Due to small size and content of the book, I prefer use the online version.
