How long does the marker last, once you open it?

Keep the lid on so it doesn't dry out and it should last a few months. When I have found mine dry, I just dip it in water and it works!

Will they work on buttercream icing?

No. It needs to be used on something kind of firm and dry. Mainly fondant or dry royal icing.
