This may sound silly, but this is what goes inside of a duvet cover right? new to the whole duvet thing..

Two more designer tricks. 1) get the next larger size for fluffiness and just stuff in and pouf out. 2) have a king and queen on yr bed for couples, you can each have one for sleeping. It also allows you to get queen covers that are cheaper or if the king is sold out. I prefer to sleep w a queen, if fits me better. So i have the bottom in a neutral white or grey, then decorate w queen on top. It can be turned sideways. I also always use the lingerie satin. This trick helps ppl w pain or sleep issues move much more easily. You can order sets from the uk with satin cover, bottom sheet, and 4 envelope pillow cases for 30 usd with 15 shipping. They are so soft and fine i need to replace every couple ys. I use charcoal, silver and white. Read amazon uk and learn. Their design options are also much better. Remember to tuck the bottom in. Overhang is so ugly.

should I also buy a duvet cover? or is just this enough

A good duvet cover is going to cost 4 or 5 times what this comforter costs, depending on whether it’s flannel, sateen, percale, linen, or regular ole cotton. In fact, a fancy linen cover would be easily 10-12 times the cost of this comforter! This is a wonderful comforter for this price, and I can buy another one easily. You can also buy sheets (same fabric choices) to protect the comforter if you’re a sweaty sleeper at a much lower cost. To me, for a great but inexpensive comforter, the main reason I’d get a cover would be to have a quick change of decor for the room on hand.

What is the fabric content?

The tag says the cover is 100% cotton, and the contents are 100% goose down and feathers. This is May of 2021 so I don't know what it was in 2016.

Would this comforter be good in an unheated bedroom in upstate NY during the winter?

I guess what is warm or not is subjective. I first tried this comforter inside and found it was way to hot. So I put it in my camper. During the fall trip it got 15*F one night at 6000 feet. Camper was 40* inside and this thing kept me warmer then most any sleeping bag I have used.
