Letting Go: Rugged Love for Wayward Souls

This is a book that you hope no one ever needs. However, if you are struggling with a potential prodigal this is an excellent resource. It really helped me to stop wallowing and think logically about how to best love a wayward young adult child. I've heard someone say that when your children are young you talk to them often about Jesus. And when they're grown you talk to Jesus often about them. So true. This is a book that can apply to different relationships but for our family it was a parent- child dynamic. Truly loving people doesn't always mean that you hold on to them with a death grip and let them dictate how everything should go. Sometimes loving them is letting them go.

I've read so many books on prodigals, but this one addresses the pain of letting them go for a time. There is a lot of accompanying Scripture to back up the points discussed. I've turned to this book many times on the journey with my wayward child. I highly recommend.

Dave Harvey and Paul Gilbert draw on a wealth of experience, Scripture and application to help us make the hard decisions that are a means of grace to us and to those loved ones who have rejected God’s ways and our love. I felt the preface and chapters 1-5 gave me the most benefit. The remaining chapters further describe the insight from the first five.

In this past year I have been walking the path of the effects of a prodigal. My husband turned away from God and decided to walk out of our 26 year marriage. There was little evidence of his drift until it became too late to try and convince him of anything but the path he was on.This Book "Letting Go: Rugged Love for Wayward Souls" has been spot-on with regards to what is going on in the situations presented by the prodigal. It is insightful and encouraging to those who love a prodigal. I found it to have advice laced with wisdom. In places where there may be gentle correction felt in the writing to those who love and live with a prodigal , it's immediately followed with encouragement and the reminder that each of us who love others has at some point engaged in unhealthy patterns of relating. We are reminded that it's part of life in this Fallen World. Those kinds of encouragement and reminders are soothing balm to the heart of those who are battling through life with a prodigal.Perhaps my favorite line of the book is this: to love a prodigal is to live exposed. For those who struggle with family members or friends who choose to live life as a prodigal, there is no getting away from the feeling of their life being exposed to everyone around them. The writers of this book address tough issues such as shame, condemnation, choosing to let go, and other related topics and do so with compassion and understanding. There's no blaming or shaming those impacted by the choices of a prodigal.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is walking the road of dealing with a prodigal. It's an easy read and at 181 pages it won't take long to get through it but the encouragement and insight obtained from reading this book is highly valuable.My thanks to the authors of this book for stepping up and writing about a topic that fills the lives of those in the church yet is rarely addressed in such a helpful manner.

The book does a great job with the reality of the prodigal person. Lots of biblical accounts to deliver counsel to the victim of a prodigal. Even in trying to convey comfort and to hold on for the ride, it is very difficult to comfort anyone during these times. May the fellowship of believers pray fervently for the prodigal as well as the victims of their poor choices,

Reminds us to anchor our faith totally in God, not in ourselves, heartbreaking circumstances and impossible situations. We need to remember God' s promises and His power over life and death.

I saw this book at an Ed Welch conference but didn’t purchase then. A few weeks later I looked for it on Amazon and decided to purchase it. I’m so glad I did. As a mom with a prodigal adult child this book has been such an encouragement and comfort in my life. I have read and reread the book many times over the last two years and each time I get so much out of it. I have given it away as a gift to many others who are struggling with someone in their life that they have come to a point where they have got to let go. Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It simply means waiting on the Lord to do his work. If you have someone in your life- a husband, a child, a boss, a friend who takes advantage of you- whatever the case may be, this book is for you. Biblically sound advice and scripturally based.

Amazing book. We recently went through a time of deep growth/sorrow with a family member and this book was vital to help explain the person's mind and heart set as well as how we should respond. I think I underlines almost every page. One of my favorite parts of this book as well as our journey is that I was faced with my own sin/responsibility in the situation that I originally thought was "theirs" . If you have a friend or family member who is acting out or wayward.... this book is a must. I could not be more thankful to the authors of this book for the wisdom and hope found in the pages of Letting Go.

A hopeful book for difficult relationships we may face in life. Practical guidance and spiritual encouragement abounds. I would recommend this book.
