Does this leave a ring around the area you have cleaned? like, is the spot clean but there's a residue of the stain around the old spot?

No it does not leave a ring. You spray it to lightly cover the entire rug or carpet then vacuum. I have had very good luck with this picking up more dog hair than vacuum alone.
