Upgraded Treager Tailgater
Turned my hard-to-use 10 year old Treager Tailgater into a wifi grill with the Smarter Grill app. Easy to install - plug and play. From the first test run it has kept the temperature within 15 degrees. Awesome upgrade and I no longer get wild temperature swings or random shutdowns.

The best upgrade for my old Traeger
I replaced my Traeger controller from my old first generation Traeger. It is a great upgrade to the smoker. This controller maintains the temperature much better, I have Bluetooth and WiFi indication and control. The old controller ran the fan always on, this new controller turns the fan on and off while maintaining temperature. Result is the smoker uses less fuel.I feel like I have a new smoker for the cost of this controller. And it has temp probe input so I don't need my separate grill thermometer.

junk
Bought this to update my old Zgrill 700d. Install was easy and like other Zgrill reviews there were fitment issues. Fitment issues I can overlook if the product works. Speaking of works, let's start there. What works:This controller turns on the grill and starts a fire. This controller's shutdown function works, it safely shuts down the grill. This controller reads the internally oven temp very well +/- 5 degrees from two other test sources. That's it.What doesn't work:The wifi/app function failed to function on Thanksgiving (today). Glad I tested it before trying to smoke a bird for multiple hours. Given that the error I received was "network issues" my guess is whatever server backend is used to login to the app isn't sized for a US holiday's worth of traffic.Critically and the most important failure, in my test run I stopped the test after the temp climbed 100 degrees over the set temp and it was still going when I decided to bail on the test. For this type of grill this failure is unacceptable. I can work with +/- 15 degrees as long as it is stable but over 100 degrees?I went back to my stock PID controller, while it too generally runs a little hot at least it is stable. Back to searching for a wifi controller to update my old grill. For those that care I ran double backup oven temp probes one from my wireless thermoworks setup and the other from my flameboss 500 kamado controller to confirm the temps this controller saw inside the grill. Oddly it reads those well it Just can't do anything with the reading it seems.

Works great.
Working great so far, wifi connects no problem, seems to control the temp with less fluctuation than my original controller.

Great upgrade!! Highly recommend for any suitable(if it fits) cooker.
Great upgrade for "low end" pellet cookers.I put this controller on an Expert Grill from Walmart that I got new in box from OfferUp about a year ago.The new controller fit the original screws and opening and even the connectors matched up. Well, except the internal can temp probe. That I had to cut the quick connects off of and wire into the two scew down terminals on the new controller. Not a big deal but it was a bit confusing with every thing else that was so well done. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is the lack of instructions and confusing data in the listing of the item for their app. I got lucky and found another reviewer who had the same problem and contacted the seller to get instructions and this reviewer did the cool thing and uploaded the sheets. Look for Brian Straight's review and check out the instructions. DO THIS BEFORE TRYING TO DOWNLOAD THE APP. The listing data on Amazon suggests the SMOKE IT app but this is NOT right. The correct app is SMARTER GRILL.The controller is awesome, has great functionality and the apparent quality is good. The color LCD is great for visibility in sunny locations which is a huge upgrade over the kind of dim and hard to read LED of the stock controller.Great value for the money and only minimal tools are needed(depending on the grill).Connectivity is great with the WiFi feature and this gives me the ability to watch the cook from anywhere. You know, like when you have to run that last minute errand for something but need to watch the temps for whatever reason. SOLVED!Accuracy seems to be pretty decent and holds about 10 degrees from the two other temp sensors I have in the can for testing.Keep in mind this is a PID device and will need to learn how your grill heats up and cools down. I suggest running a couple of test heat cycles first to confirm the system is "learning" and doesn't over heat. My first test run went all the way up to 426 degrees before it started backing down. The controller board will give the dreaded ERH code if the internal temp exceeds 470 so I was pretty close. The second heat run only climbed to about 380 before backing down. SET TEMP for both runs was 300. Third run the controller ran the temp up to 315 then "caught" the drop at 295. Temp help between 295 and 305 for an hour after that warm up. A 10 degree hysteresis("working range") is not that big of a deal.Overall, I highly recommend this upgrade if your pellet cooker doesn't have WiFi built in or if your display is dim or difficult to read in some lighting conditions.Only minimal tinkering should be needed. Watch the color coded wires and make double sure your old controller uses the same color codes before swapping the wires. Even then, double check before plugging it in the first time.If your old cooker uses 1/4" quick connects for the internal temp sensor, just cut them off, strip the insulation back carefully as there is a fair bit of high temp woven(fiberglass) sheathing that will need to be removed under the rubber outer. Then just twist up the skinny wires and put one each under the screw down connector(blue connector box to the left of the serial number on the upper edge near the screw hole).

37 year old traeger gets upgrade!
This controller added modern day control to this humbled restore relic! I was stoked to get to get my hands on a classic grill and updating it. I added two temperature probes and a self ignition mounting bracket since originally this was started by hand 🔥. All easy stuff! Now I went from a 3 speed smoke-med-high. To a Bluetooth wifi PID controller on a 1988 to 89 traeger. Yes 88 was quality control sticker on original electronic. Hope the traeger's think it's a cool restoration!
