Q: How much weight can it withstand?

Hi,this wishacc book stand height adjustable can fit about 5kg / 11lb.

Q: Can you place a 5" binder on the stand? I'd like to display a binder for people to view but I'm not sure if it would fit?

Yes. I have put large books like language dictionaries on it that are at least 10 inches.

Q: I can't adjust height easily. part 'a' sits on top of part 'b' (tube) at highest pt very tightly - considerable force to lower further. what's wrong?

First, take it apart: disconnect the horizontal pipe from the vertical adjustment pipe. Then remove the plastic-inner-fitting from the hole in the horizontal pipe. Turn the plastic-inner-fitting over, end-over-end. Reinsert the plastic-inner-fitting. Put the horizontal pipe back onto the vertical pipe. Tap the horizontal pipe vigorously downward to clear past the top edge of the vertical pipe. Then the horizontal pipe should slide much easier in this alignment. At least that is what worked for me -- to cause a tightness problem and fix that problem. One of the plastic-inner-fitting end's edges binds at the top of the upright tube. The other end of the plastic insert allows the top of the vertical tube to pass through that top edge. Then it goes up and down easily.

Q: Are there hinges on the bottom lip?

On the 15.4 x 11 version, there are hinges on the little shelf that holds the bottom of your book. I didn't like that because it hits the bottom edge of your book and damages the book, so I removed the hinges and screwed the shelf directly to the back plate.
