Shifts large rear cogs with 6, 7, 8, 9 speed MTB index shifters. Also compatible with 10 speed Shimano STI brake/shift levers
After much research, I picked this derailleur to shift a vintage MTB with Shimano 6 speed cassette to which I had mounted a custom 36T large rear cog. It replaced a Shimano M730 XT rear derailleur, 1988 vintage, which would only shift up to a 32T cog. A cool fact: the activation ratio of this 9-speed derailleur is the same as older indexed 6, 7, and 8 speed indexed gearing. There are no compatibility problems, since the indexing is in the shifter and not in the rear derailleur. The only change I had to make over the older Shimano derailleur cable set up was to shorten the rear cable housing and cable. The cable anchor point is a bit different, but not the activation ratio (the distance the cable has to pull for each gear), so it worked fine with my Shimano XT M730 6-speed index shifters. Another useful fact: this derailleur will work with recent Shimano 10 speed cassettes shifted with Shimano STI brake/shift combined levers. It sounds counter intuitive, I know, but the activation ratio matches correctly for this combination, too. 10-speed STI does not use the same ratio as 10-speed MTB thumb shifters - it retains the older ratio. I bought a second rear derailleur in case I want to put an 11-36 10 speed cassette on my 2010 Ultegra STI equipped road bike for use in steep mountains. A final caveat: don't try any of this with current models of Shimano derailleurs such as DynaSys, clutch, etc. Upgrading to a more recent model 10-speed derailleur only buys you incompatibility. My research shows the M592 is the latest wide ratio model that works with older stuff and/or STI.

Excellent replacement for my Alivio 9 speed: Especially with bike parts so hard to find!
Bike part shortage forced me to spend an additional $30 for this derailleur. I was kind of sad until, once installed, the Deore showed it's quality and performance in it's precise shifting and function. Knowing now the difference in this up-grade I would now always replace any of the entry-level Shimano derailleurs with this one. There are 'better' models. Until racing or competition requires it you'd not need better then the Deore for your 7-9 speed gear set. Be aware cable adjustment is not at the derailleur (many less-quality builds are) so that if you don't have an adjustment at the shifter you'll need to install an in-line adjuster. I didn't need one but found them for around $9 for a pair (as many bikes have front and read derailleus). Note, shift cables are 4mm and I don't recommend using the more common 5mm adjusters which are designed for brake cables.

Great derailleur, check to make sure you have an index adjuster!
I bought this to replace a Shimano Alivio rear mech after it caught on a rock and twisted into a useless mess in my rear spokes. This mech is compatible with 7, 8, and 9, but NOT 10 speed cassette/shifter combo.Installation was simple once you understand what to do but can be a little confusing at first. Don't worry, you can do it.I definitely like how low-profile this thing is Time will tell if it has sacrificed durability in order to gain this low profile but I doubt it - in my experience the lower tension cage/pulley breaks before the attachment point, and this feels very well built of sturdy metal and beefy pivot attachments.Do note that if your old mech had a built-in index adjuster, you will need to add a new indexer, as this mech does not have one incorporated. I recommend the Jagwire Mickey for it's ease of installation.

So glad I didn’t spend money on higher model
I was getting a lot of noise from my 2017 giant atx 2 as soon I took it on a trail. The noise was coming from weak spring tension on the tourney derailleur causing the chain to bounce all over and the derailleur to slam into the cassette. Wrapped the chainstay in a old tube but didn’t fix it. Bought the Shimano 592 hoping to quite the bike down a bit. Not only is it silent and completely solved my issue the shifting is so much more crisp and seamless. I installed it on my 3x7 drivetrain using a jagwire in-line barrel adjuster. Install was straight forward but it was my first attempt at setting up the indexing so it took some trial and error. So glad I didn’t spend extra money on an XT or SLX or something like that. This worked perfectly. I highly recommend this as an upgrade if you’re using tourney (garbage) or worn out derailleur on your Shimano 7,8, or 9 speed cassette

Extremely good value-for-money solid metal derailleur
This derailleur works good on my Shimano 8 speed drivetrain cassette. The derailleur is made entirely out of metal, so it seems very durable, and looks very good. But it did not come with a barrel adjuster, so I added the Jagwire inline barrel adjuster, and it works fine now. It works way better than my old Shimano $20 derailleur that came with my mountain bike. The springs are all much heftier and do their job much better. It shifts super well into the gears and never hesitates. Very accurate. it was also extremely easy to install and setup. Literally took under 5 minutes and I was up and riding again.

Caution check model number on back of derailleur for compatibility
Purchased as a replacement for road bike but this model has a different cable entry more suited to a mountain bike ,Not all Deore deraillers are the same. Check model number stamped on back of derailler to get the correct one.mine was RD M591, too latre to return once out of packaging and fitted.

Derailleur is fine, but this was shipped from Israel to Canada ...
Derailleur is fine, but this was shipped from Israel to Canada for me. I wish I had known. In this age of climate change, it seems pretty irresponsible for me to order something from this far away. I would rather pay $5 more for something local!
