Our tray and cubes are plastic and do not have any smell . Very environmentally and friendly material .

Hello! The child that I gave this to LOVES it! He is 5 years old and does not have all the gadgets like computer and cell phones.......so for him the "old school" way of learning.....he loves it!! If the child you have in mind needs lights, bells and noise, it won't be very exciting!! Its a great learning game! He even now spells words that are not on the cards. And yes, it is suitable for a gift!! BAK
