En veldig god bok!
I’ve tried many, many different language-learning materials over the years, and this is one of the best. Free SoundCloud audio makes the learning experience even better. If you have some Norwegian under your belt already you can dive into this without having to read the first book because this book provides a synopsis of what happened in book one.

Some Good... Some Not So Good
Be advised that I am not all the way through this book yet and I worked through the first Nils book twice. First the good: I like the story aspect. The grammar is explained very well (most books really stink in that regard unless they are outright grammar books). This book is well organized and well-thought-out with regards to sequence. It's pleasant and covers a lot of the social aspects and everyday "life" in Norway as well. The book itself is quality and will not fall apart under typical heavy usage. There are also plenty of exercises--something else that other Norwegian language learning books tend to lack (at least most of them). And now the bad (IMO): unless you have a huge Norwegian vocabulary going into this book, plan on spending about 90% of your study time trying to figure words out via context in the sentences, looking them up in a dictionary, or typing them into translation software. It's pretty brutal. I'm not going to slam this book in particular because it's common in lots of language books. And I'm sorry, but having to look up words all time does NOT help; it simply wastes time. If you don't know the word, you don't know it. Please stop punishing learners; PROVIDE the text translations in case they are needed and provide word lists. This is one place where "interlinear" reader books have it all over other language books. Unfortunately, the interlinear method is not integrated into more comprehensive language learning books (with grammar, word lists, exercises, etc) as far as I know. Anyway, that is a huge time waster for me and my biggest gripe with this book. It's not that I am opposed to a lot of new vocabulary being thrown at the learner, just please don't waste his or her time by having to look it up in a dictionary all the time. Provide the translations, PLEASE. What tends to happen with me in this book is that I get the grammar right away--it's never a problem--but there is certainly vocabulary overload. Obviously, knowing words is the most basic building block, but I find that the way it is handled in the Nils books (especially this second one) is just not a very efficient way of handling it, at least for me. Other than that, I think pretty much everything else about the book is top notch. I especially like that the author understands grammar is important and he doesn't water it down or exclude it. It's there, and you WILL learn it well if you work at it. The vocab.... ugh.... I guess having a photographic memory would REALLY help for this book.

Book Takes It To The Next Level
Not just the learning areas, but even the instructions are in Norwegian helping to learn more of the language.

Veldig Bra!
I've just start Mysteriet om Nils 2, it is a fun way to learn to read Norwegian. You can also take the online classes to get accustomed to understanding conversation. I lived in Norway over 30 years ago, so I remember the basics. If you are brand new to the language start with Book 1.

Great next step past basic self-teaching books
I am only a little way into this course, but I can see that it is working well. It is the perfect follower for the more basic courses that I have.

I’ve been a language teacher for more than 20 years and I have never come across a better book in any language that I have studied/taught. I’ve managed to teach myself a fair amount of Norwegian using this textbook and its predecessor, written in English (level A1-A2). I had no previous knowledge of that language whatsoever, apart from being an English speaker and knowing a bit of German. This review would take too long if I were to list all the pros, and the books don’t look that appealing at first glance due to the printing process used. However, they are more than amazing. You follow a story (listening to it online is a must as pronunciation can be difficult) and don’t even realise when you’re learnt it all. It took me several years to pick up this much knowledge in other languages, and I tried everything. Absolutely brillant. I just wish they added more languages (so far they’ve done Norwegian, Swedish and German).

Recommend it. Nice original idea, teaching the language with a story. I like the way grammar is explained as well.
