Great experience with this vice (9")
Nice and heavy, and opens up really far. The the quick-release feature takes some getting used to, but it's really nice and works pretty well. The turning bar is fine and provides lots of leverage to clamp it nice and tight, though I think I'll put some custom knobs on the ends for a better grip. I managed to install it pretty easily onto my current workbench by putting a stack of two 2x6s underneath for it to bolt in to and making the static jaw flush with the top and edge of the benchtop. NOTES: I've only used it lightly since I installed it a few weeks ago, so I can't speak for the longevity, but all the pieces seem very solid and long lasting. I haven't installed wooden faces onto the jaws, so I can't speak for how easy that will be to do, but it looks pretty simple and has the holes in the cast iron faces for them to install on to.

Best wood vise for a home bench
My go to vise when working with wood. I have a regular vise for metal on one side of my bench and this one for wood on the other side. Never take it off. This is a very old design that is tried and true. Buy it, even if you won’t use it much. Adds a certain level of professionalism to your workbench.

A Workhorse
I have two of these vices one on each of my benches plus the 9" version as a tail vice on one of the tables. They have been in use for a couple of years now and I only wish I had installed them ten years ago. They are not as pretty as some higher end vices but are fully functional, as robustly made, and will last a lifetime. The mechanism works smoothly. I brush the sawdust and grime off of the screw and shafts from time to time. It is important to install them properly and attach whatever you want to use as jaw pads. I used maple, drilling dog holes in the outboard pad so that I can extend the range of the the vice to the width or length of the bench using dogs set in the bench top. The only problem I have had with either is that the tips on the handle unscrew themselves and can fall off and get lost, but this is easily fixed with a little locktite.

Versatile
What I like most about this vice is its ability to used wherever you have a place to clamp it. i have only had a short time but I have used it in several different locations where I've been working. All you need is a place to clamp it and you're good to go. The jaws hold tight I haven't had a problem with anything I'm holding shifting while I'm using it. I've noticed people mentioning that the jaws aren't parallel but it's in the description that the jaws have a "toe-in" feature which is the reason for that. My only complaint is that the rod to tighten the clamp to a table or whatever is small which makes tightening it a little difficult. That being said, the clamp does hold tight and so far hasn't worked loose in use. All in all a great little vice, one I'm glad i purchased I'd give it a 5 if it weren't for the small clamp rod so 4.5*

Impressive for a portable vice
Perfect for those times I need to plane, or route, the edge of a short board, without having to drag out my 'WorkMate' and set it up. Added 1/2" pine facings to the jaws that extend 1/2" out from the top and sides. With the toe-in of the jaws, the grip on the work piece is solid. The clamping screw holds tight to the workbench. And the vice is wide enough at the base to keep it from spinning out of parallel with the bench edge if side force is accidentally applied. And the price is not bad compared to permanent mount vices I've looked at.

Great vice and very well-made.
This absolutely solved my problem of pulling wharf wood together. It’s nice and heavy, so we can definitely get big jobs done. Recommended.

Handy so far
I noticed upon opening the package it is packaged well and came in great shape. The screw is tight, but not too tight. The clamp faces are at an angle as the advertisement says. I've clamped some 3/4" - 2" thick wood and it clamps tight without leaving any marks and seems to grip parallel. The mounting clamp is firm as well and holds well. As an added precaution, I screwed the base of the vise to my workbench through the two mounting holes. This is temporary until I can get my new workbench built which will have through bolts installed as per the instructions. I will probably buy another so I can hold longer boards for finishing.

I'd rather raise my leg up onto my work bench and hold a 2 by 4 with my toes than use this again.
The structural integrity of this product is severely lacking. I wasn't even a frequent user of the vise (<once / 2 weeks), nor do I use the tool for any particularly strenuous task (literally just holding wood in place to drill). The poor quality quickly became apparent only after just 3 weeks when one of the nuts on the turn handle just fell off and upon reattaching I noticed that the threads were stripped by manufacturer's initial attachment. From there, the vise progressively disintegrated. A crack formed within the sliding jaw that grew with every use, even including merely holding a small wood stud in place. The crack spread over the entire sliding jaw piece and it eventually broke in half, rendering 75% of the jaw surface area useless.. Of course, that half of the entire vise just eventually fell off pitifully, and now I have ugly four screwholes drilled into my brand new work bench for literally nothing. Save your $50. You're better off paying a friend to come hold whatever material in place for you.

This looked like the one I needed for my little projects, small, well built and portable, it delivers everyday and I’m very happy with it! Good buy!

I recently bought this vise because of all the positive reviews online. After a second time using this vice and clamping something, one of the vice ends cracked right in half. See pics. Also upon receiving this vice, the box was all dirty and greasy, seem like it was already used. Very disappointed. Send me a new one.

Good value for the money. Easy to install and the rapid release works well. I bought this based on a recommendation by Fine Woodworking.
