The Sequel is Better
A great book but I found THE Classroom Management Book (by the same author) more helpful than this one. The First Days of School sets the stage for the strategy of procedures in the classroom. THE Classroom Management Book fast-forwards through theory and shows real-life procedures that you can actually use. If you already have a good grasp of teaching philosophies or you've been teaching for more than a year, you can probably skip this one and go straight to the sequel.

A Teacher's Guide to Organization & Discipline
This is a great book for teaching at elementary level with innocent minds. Also, there are many good organizational tips. However, when teaching Algebra II to public high school students in a socially dysfunctional area where student respect for even society at large is in trouble, then this book fails to provide the character building plans to save such students.

Don't forget the companion book "The Classroom Management Book"
If you are a teacher, buy this book and its companion "The Classroom Management Book" also by Harry Wong!! Halfway through my first semester of my first year teaching, my principal gave me "The First Days of School" but I didn't know how to put what it said into practice. My classes ran all over me. It was awful. I bought this updated version and also "The Classroom Management Book". This book coupled with "The Classroom Management Book" has so many things that are needed to make a classroom run smoothly! "The First Days of School" is the "what" and "why" on how to run a great classroom and "The Classroom Management Book" is the "how" to put it all into practice. There is so much good advice in this book, and loads of ideas for all grade levels to make a classroom run smoothly. My 2nd year teaching was completely wonderful!! Procedures in place, taught, and executed made teaching year two SO MUCH BETTER! If you are a teacher- GET THIS BOOK!, get "The Classroom Management Book", follow both, and you will love teaching!

Fantastic day
This was a wonderful read. I first heard about it from a friend of mine who has been a teacher for several years. I highly regiment this book to anyone interested in entering the education field in any way.His advice is practical and thought out. Remembering to be intentional with everything you do as an educator can help with most problems that arise in class.I've implemented several of his techniques already in the classroom I'm in this year and it's helped remedy issuer that have been coming up. One certain that beginning the school year with these procedures and expectations for a class will make the classroom culture more manageable and enjoyable.

I had always heard that this book was useful & was like the educator's bible
I had always heard that this book was useful & was like the educator's bible, but when it arrived I wasn't sure if I would agree (it looks like an outdated book!). After reading the required chapters for class, I realized how true it was that this book was an educator's goldmine to pertinent information to make the first day of school go smoothly. I highly encourage young teachers to purchase this book & read it, & keep it in your library for years to come! There is so much useful information in here that I doubt many people would disagree with Wong's ideas!

If you are switching from another career this is a must read!
I rarely write reviews but this book deserves it. I am switching from another field and have been reading books to prepare to become a teacher. I didn't go though a teaching program and was worrying about my first year of teaching and what it entails. This books break all that down! I feel confident and have a plan of action to tackle my first year teaching. The book gives you tips about class management, discipline, routines and procedures, objective and assessment alignment, planning, etc. This book is a god sent and I strongly recommend it!Only downside, some of the links do not work. Still, it is worth it; trust me ;)

Good information, if you can find it
The book includes useful information for new teachers. However, it is an irritating read. The authors spend more words trying to convince the reader to read the book they are already reading than they spend on classroom management strategies. I purchased the book for a class, and had to force myself to finish it. I already bought the book. I can’t figure out why the authors used so much text in the book to try to sell the book to me.

Seems great, but supplementary download links are REALLY hard to find!
The book seems great! I thought the download information wasn't there, and had given some demerits, but I've adjusted the ratings back up! Finding the supplementary info took a bit of hunt and peck. it's there, but you have to look for a tab beneath the book that says Going Beyond, after you find the landing page for the book.

Just what I needed! But maybe not the best organized ...
In a nutshell: this book pretty much single-handedly filled a crucial gap in my teaching! Allow me to explain. My teaching practicum experience many years ago (2001-03) was unusual in the sense that I wasn't taught much about the "meat and potatoes" of teaching, but rather to focus on how to teach the curriculum and to consider the big philosophical issues of education (inclusive education, standardized testing pros and cons, etc.). It's as though the faculty was expecting my mentor teachers to cover the basics and my mentor teachers were expecting the faculty to teach them. So when I got my first full-time assignment in 2004, I had only the most basic understanding of how to manage a classroom. Perhaps that's why my contract only lasted one year; it wasn't a disaster, but I felt like I was missing some basic understandings that would have made things run much more smoothly - and look much more impressive on my evaluations.Several years later and looking to move from the substitute teaching list back to full-time teaching after pursuing another profession, I saw this book one day in a classroom and decided to order it. As I mentioned, it has pretty much single-handedly filled the gap for me! I now have a concrete classroom management plan and also a much better understanding of how exactly to align my teaching and assessment with curriculum standards. I now have an arsenal of concrete ideas and solutions to bring into my next interview instead of looking a little flustered when asked questions like, "So, what's your classroom management plan?" as I was during an interview only three months ago.So why only 4 stars? I found it hard to get into the book. I started at page one and first of all got the sense that there were sometimes too many side-boxes of info. I also got the sense that a bunch of post-it notes and other notes had been thrown together to create some sort of Frankenstein-like structure at times. Also, repetition is good, but in several places in this book seems to do so redundantly or in a haphazard way, again due to what I just mentioned. So the bottom line is that it's a bit messy, that it could have shaved off 50 pages if it had been better organized.BUT IF YOU CAN GET OVER THIS like I did, then this book is pure gold. It's immensely practical even though it's long-winded or haphazard at times. I would advise taking a couple of months to really dig through it, however, and be serious about creating a management plan or else you won't get out of this book everything that it has to offer. In other words, you simply won't be able to read and do much about this book if you're start a new teaching position in a week or two.

Útil però només tracta sobre rutines
Només es centra en com treballar les rutines i procediments. No parla d'aprenentatge cooperatiu.
