Stunning photographs, detailed descriptions
The photography in this book is stunning - the best in any climbing book I've read. Ben Tibbetts carried a full frame camera up every peak, and his equipment and skill shows in every photo. But more than just photography, the author has managed to weave in history, geography, and a narrative for each climb. It is an exquisite and comprehensive documentary of journeys in the Alps. I cannot stress enough that if you like breathtaking photos of mountain climbing, you should buy this book -- without question.

Mountainous effort, and a benchmark for mountain photography books
This is a fantastic piece of work. Having been to some of these easier peaks myself, I was looking for a book that would cover most of the 4000 meter summits from the UIAA list. However, the book focuses on the more challenging climbs, leaving out dozens of others. A lot of pages are dedicated to routes around the Mont Blanc massif (nothing wrong with that). That doesn't diminish the book's value at all, it's just that I was expecting even more variety in the photographs (which are of the highest quality throughout the book, by the way) and a bit less detailed climbing information. These technical details are already available - in a more portable format - in Martin Moran's book The 4000m Peaks of the Alps for example, in case you actually want to climb these peaks. That said, I enjoyed the book immensely and appreciate the author's hard efforts in putting together such an inspiring book. It was also interesting to read about the first ascents and cultural aspects of climbing as well, which brought a wider perspective to it all. The author's love for alpinism, climbing and photography shines through the pages. I will return to this book many times, whenever I need to get back to the mountains, or when I need to get that mountain feeling in my armchair by looking at these fantastic photographs! Highly recommended.
