Q: What are the smallest AND largest diameter rope that this will work on?

Not sure but It'll work with all normal 4x4 winch ropes.

Q: The description implies that this tool is intended for temporary repairs. How long is the loop serviceable?

Not sure why they say temporary repair as long as you reuse the metal loop that came with the line it should be good as new. I’m still using the repaired line on mine and it has been working fine. I have used it 3 more times sense I made the repair. My wench line is about 10 feet shorter but works great for me.

Q: can this be used to splice double braided rope?

no... the weave of double braided rope does not allow splicing through itself. for making splices in double braid, you have to just fold the rope back on itself, and then make a wrapping around it to hold it [called serving i think]

Q: Will this do 1 inch double braid?

Noi don't think it will open far enough for the rope fit in the Chinese finger.
