Just opened one yesterday and it was exactly as you described. Had to dig down into the mushy wax to find wick.

I never tried to light mine. I feel in love with the smell of these candles one Christmas, but I am an electric wax burner girl so I put it in my burners. The candle is so soft, I just scooped out a little spoonful and put it in the wax burner. Best lasting fragrance.
