Can this kit also be used as a small learning dc generator as well as a dc motor?

Jerry, Great Question in theory any DC Motor can perform either task. This kit if you apply a voltage and slightly spin the shaft it will spin as a DC Motor. To use as a generator with nothing connected spin the motor kit shaft with a drill motor and connect a volt meter between the red and black female banana terminals and you should see a +/- voltage spin the drill the other direction you should see the voltage reverse . If you have a 1000ufd 25 V capacitor and you connect it across the banana jacks this will help to smooth out the voltage fluctuations.

How big is this product? It is hard to tell from the pictures.

The base is a hard plastic about 3/4 inches high, 3 1/2 inches wide, and 5 1/2 inches long. The entire rotor is a steel rod 3 inches long counting the commutator on one end and a plastic pulley on the other, and is about 1 1/2 inches above the plastic base. The stator sides are made of steel that is coated with red with a permanent magnet on the top. The rotor assembly is 3 1/4 inches high. I assembled the kit in about 10 minutes. The only challenge was getting the right bend on the brushes so they make good contact with the commutator. It's a great little kit and works well on 6 volts. I used a battery clip that I picked up at an electronics store that has a '9volt battery connection' and holds 4 AA batteries. I used a standard 9 volt battery clip to connect to the motor leads. Definitely a good motor for a science project.

Can it be reversed to work as a dynamo / generator?

Possibly but it would be too inefficient. I doubt it could light an LEad
