Is the waist band really tight?

Absolutely. If it weren't for the length I would swear I got a kid's size medium. They are super soft and have great huge pockets. Just have to wear them lower below the waist. Ankle elastic also very tight. I weigh 125, so it's not like I ordered too small a size.
