Back in Town
When Joe Walsh left James Gang I followed and didn't look back ... or forward, to the next incarnation with new guitarist/singer/songwriter Tommy Bolin. It wasn't until later I developed a taste for his music with the 1975 solo release Teaser. Recently I discovered the two albums he did with James Gang, Bang and Miami, and was very happy with both. Tommy writes, plays and sings throughout with the very respectable rhythm section that was good enough for Joe. The two albums are worth a listen. Bang is the gem.

Two lesser known but nevertheless really good albums
Two really good James Gang albums that display the guitar mastery and songwriting ability of the late great Tommy Bolin.

Bolin leads the Gang
Other reviewers are correct that this is a great two-fer package from BGO. The sound is clearly superior to previous versions, and it's a neat package of Tommy Bolin's two albums with the James Gang. They are essentially Tommy Bolin albums, since he wrote or co-wrote all but one song on both albums. The albums are average compared to some of the amazing music going on in 1973 and 1974, yet they work as rock sometimes elevated by the better songs and/or Bolin's interesting guitar work, such as the intro to "Standing in the Rain". (As always, go listen to Tommy's jazz debut on Billy Cobham's Spectrum (1973) for his absolute best from this era.) Of the two, Bang is stronger with the first five songs (the old Side 1) showing that Bolin could write good material in this rock band context. ("Must Be Love" was a hit in Tommy's adopted home state of Colorado and got some national airplay.) The songs on Miami are generally weaker, but still worth a listen for Bolin fans to hear the odd flashes of interesting guitar. The "Praylude" introduction to "Red Skies" and "Spanish Lover" are highlights. The rest of the band provides solid though not brilliant rock backing, and Roy Kenner has a decent rock voice (although I prefer Tommy's gentler vocals on "Alexis" and "Spanish Lover"). You can hear the beginnings of some of the compositions that would end up on Tommy's first solo album, Teaser, which would come a year after Miami. These albums won't make you forget Joe Walsh's indelible stamp on The James Gang, and casual listeners probably won't pay attention. But I would say this two-fer is essential for Bolin fans.

CRYSTAL CLEAR REMASTER // FORGET YOUR OLD COPY
James Gang "Bang" ---what an outstanding album. Always a favorite of mine since I was a kid. I owned the Atco CD release for years & always thought the sound was lackluster (sounded like volume level topped out at a certain point & just not very clear).Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed this album for years & recently had come across this listing for the 2015 remastered version, doubled with "Miami"I immediately thought - I must buy this to see if the sound quality is better. I received it & plugged that baby in right away.....WOW, I could not believe my ears, it was like I was hearing this album for the first time!!!!The clear sound quality is a major improvement. I could hear Bolin's guitar like never before, I was hearing chords that went totally unnoticed on my old version. The vocals & instruments sound amazing. I kind of wish that the two albums were separate instead of on one disc but that is easy to overlook due to the greatness of hearing these albums in this new crystal clear bliss. Absolutely worth the price to purchase this album again - throw out your old copies & pretend they never existed!!!

Good snapshot of Tommy Bolin in transition
I'm a big Tommy Bolin fan and I had never heard these albums. This definitely isn't the greatest work of the James Gang but there are some good tracks. The Bolin influence comes through and gives hints of his later work.

Good work BGO and Andrew Thompson
My copy arrived today! I've waited a decade for a remastering of "Bang"....I've got it now! The output is so much stronger than the ATCO pressing! Sounds clean as a whistle to my ear! Good work BGO and Andrew Thompson. The recording is 43 years old. If you like Tommy Bolin and don't know the album....give this a spin! Less than $20 from Bonnie Scotland...one of the best sellers on the Amazon! Totally satisfied.....
