Quality Product
This heat mat looks and works great. The digital control is easy to adjust from celsius to degrees and can be adjusted to the desired temp for the seeds you are working with. There is a thermostat connected probe that is placed in the planting area and it comes with a small chart that gives you the recommended temperature for the different plants. The water proof mat is easy to clean and is just the right size for my shelving unit.

Works great for 10 degrees above room temperature.
It will raise the soil temperature by 10 degrees over ambient room temperature. For seed starts that require a higher soil temperature this heat mat does its job and does it well. With the temperature probe you know what the soil temperature is. I’m looking forward to having hot peppers to transplant into my garden and have a jump on my growing season. It covers the entire bottom of my seed tray. The temperature in the picture is 79.5 degrees.

Some issues at first but it’s been corrected.
Update to my review—I received the new replacement unit today and the new thermostat is working. Amazon and Vivosun quickly resolved my issue and sent a replacement that took only two days to arrive. Thanks to both Companies for taking care of this! I’ve increased my original 3 star review to 5 stars! Testing it out—you set the thermostat to a temperature, I.e. 74 degrees (Fahrenheit) and insert the temperature probe into the soil or growing medium. If the probe is reading less than the desired temperature it will run the heating pad until the medium is heated to the temperature you want it. My new replacement unit shows all this in degrees Fahrenheit, and let’s you program the temperature in Fahrenheit. The first “defective” one only showed it in degrees Celsius and could only be set to temperatures in Celsius before displaying the Fahrenheit Temperature. The new heating pad, like the previous one works, no issues there. Keep I’m mind though it plugs into the thermostat, the thermostat does not set or regulate the temperature of the heating pad. The heating pad will be warmer than the temperature displayed on the thermostat—as the thermostat is only monitoring the temperature of the soil or growing medium. Once it reaches the set temperature it shuts off power to the heating pad. My older review from earlier this week dealing with the defective thermostat: I am in the process of returning the combination seedling heating pad and thermostat because the thermostat doesn’t work. The unit I received did not supply power to the heating pad. I had set up everything as per the instructions and kept an eye on it, noticing that the “heating” light never came on with the pad plugged in. So I took a non contact thermometer and checked the pad temperature—it was room temp and nothing more, then plugged in an outlet tester (in the photos) to check the thermostat plug in for the heating pad and there was nothing. I’m assuming it’s not wired correctly and contacted Vivosun’s support via email. I emailed them Sunday and have not heard anything back yet, so I decided to exchange the item through Amazon—which had a very easy and efficient way of handling the exchange—they are sending me a new one which I hope works correctly and I have to drop the defective one off at my nearest Kohl’s store customer service department to be sent back to Amazon. I’ll have to update this once I get the replacement unit and can better judge the thermostat. The heating pad works very well and I had to manually regulate the temperature to sprout my seeds. It seems very heavy duty for the wattage it works on and should last a few seasons. I know it’s offered separately from the combination set I had ordered. If it had worked right, the thermostat was easy to set to the temperature on and I like how the probe is designed. The only other complaint I had was that you have to set the temperature in Celsius—but it will display the temperature in Fahrenheit. Some conversion work needs to be done if you want to set it at 80 degrees F for tomatoes. Had it worked and controlled the heating pad, had Viviosun contacted me back with their advice on what to do (it’s rumored on Facebook they are not responding to emails possibly because of being located in China and not working due to current events), I would have given this a 5 star review and written how well it works. Hopefully I can post that review once I get a properly working replacement.

Works best indoors
When I received the Vivosun heating mat, I initially set it up in my kitchen and set a small container of pepper seeds on it. I set the thermostat to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a good temperature for germinating pepper seeds. The thermostat did a fine job of keeping the soil temperature to the set temperature. I have no complaints with the Vivosun mat and thermostat. Other purchasers complained that the mat did not lay flat, but I did not have that problem. Next I set up a little propagation station on my patio. I set a Jiffy tray on top of the soil heating mat, and put my planted peat pots in the tray. Once again, I set the thermostat to 80 degrees. Initially I left the tray uncovered. I discovered that without a cover the soil temperature in the tray was virtually the same as the ambient temperature of 60 degrees. I put the plastic cover on the seedling tray, and the soil temperature rose to about 78 degrees. Without the cover, it seems that the heat from the mat just radiated out into space. With the cover on, the unit was not able to achieve a temperature of 80 degrees unless the ambient temperature was about 65 degrees or higher. The mat is low wattage which means that it can only produce so much heat. It is not designed to be used in the way that I am using it, so I cannot fault the product. When used outside, it does provide some benefit by raising the soil temperature by maybe 10 or 15 degrees. Where I live, this can be enough to prevent plants from freezing on a cold night. However, for the purpose of germinating seeds, the Vivosun really needs to be used indoors where the ambient temperature is not less than, say, 65 degrees. Unfortunately, I do not have the space in my small house. I should mention that my pepper seeds are sprouting nicely even if the soil temperature is a bit less than optimum. I will probably look around to see if there is a soil heating mat with a higher wattage. I saw an ad for one from a hydroponics company that appears to be aimed at cannabis growers. Of course that unit is much more expensive than the Vivosun....

Worked super well!
Once I figured out that you are supposed to plug the temp meter into the temp reader and not the wall, it worked great! Super awesome device! I used it to heat stratify my sweet potatoes after I harvested them in late October, and it was great! Kept them right at 85 degrees.

Exactly what I needed for propagating a few clones. The mat itself is IP67 and seems durable. I can see why this would work well for fermentation, the heating mat is very flexible and just the right length to wrap around a 1 gallon jug. For my purposes I needed a heating mat to warm 4x glass mugs that hold seedling cups (the red plastic kind with removable humidity dome) to propagate a few clones, and it works exactly as I need it to, with temperature probe taped to the bottom side of one of the glass cups to maintain the proper heat for rooting. For the price (28CAD) at the time, its a fair price, although the mat is smaller in person than what the pictures make it seem - like laying 3 phones end to end in size. The thermostat itself would be useful for more than just regulating the heating mat on and off, limited to 1000W according to manual.
