Tons of Fun!
Interceptor Ace is an excellent solitaire game that lets you take part in the defense of the Reich. Gameplay is fast paced, fun, and historically accurate (but see below). The game is played as a year-long campaign composed of individual one-turn sorties. There are usually 8 sorties per month for a total of 92 possible game turns. Players can fly 4 different fighter types (Bf109, Bf110, Fw190, and Me410) with 30 possible variants. Over the course of the campaign, the player’s pilot gains promotions, prestige, experience, and can use accumulated points to purchase special skills or to switch aircraft types. Most sorties take between 20-45 minutes to play. The action is really engaging and can be quite tense. This is a fun game! It’s a narrative-type wargame where you follow the actions of your individual pilot. You have some important tactical decisions to make, but not as many as games like Hornet Leader. The tradeoff is that you really begin to connect with your pilot. You also get to feel the stress of flying missions in a realistic, real-world manner. For example, I had worked a pilot along quite nicely and was feeling pretty invincible. Then during an engagement with a Green P-47 pilot (who I thought I’d cut down in seconds) my guy was KIA by a single lucky shot from the newbie. The rules are straight forward and effective. The only quibbles I’ve found I’ve fixed with simple in-house rules. For example, my biggest issue was that the out-of-the-box combat results were way too bloody. I easily solved this by simply shifting the damage results one column to the left (if my plane has 12 firepower, I use the results from the 8 firepower column). The other issues I’ve come across I’ve also been able to easily address. If you’re looking for a new game—or you’re new to solitaire war gaming—pick up Interceptor Ace. You will probably love it! It’s a must have for daily bombing campaign aficionados.
