Do you need the other lego sets to play the board game?

Yes you do. If you go online (Youtube) there are several critiques. The 'board' which comes with the toy is a piece of paper with no instructions and no obvious way to 'play' So forget it as a game, it's a very nice Leo Ninjago set which my grandson (6) enjoyed making and playing with.
