UPDATE My UPS has given reliable service and kicked-in immediately when power failures occurred, keeping my computer and peripherals running long enough for me to complete my work and shut down. The unit has been completely reliable throughout. I recently needed to replace the battery and received excellent support in the UK from Schneider Electrics. Probably deserves 5 stars, but not tested for long enough or with enough power failures. I live in a small village where voltage fluctuations and power outages are more common than in urban areas. I decided I needed to protect my iMac, and bought the APC BR900GI based on reviews from different sources. It has been in use for a few weeks, and of course since installing it there have been no power outages to test it. I will need to update this review after the next black out. The unit is larger than I expected and is very solid and seems good quality. No IEC mains power supply cable was supplied with the UPS but luckily I had several spares that I could use. All outputs from the UPS are IEC. I could use one of the two male to female cable supplied with the UPS to replace my iMac's power cable., but I had to buy a separate IEC male plug to 4 way UK plug adapter to connect my peripherals. Setting up the unit was simple. The most difficult part was moving my desk to gain access to the cables and power sockets. My iMac is connected to the Master Outlet, and the 4 way adapter peripherals to the outlet controlled by the Master. When I turn off my iMac it automatically turns off all peripherals after the Mac has shut down completely. The CD software CD supplied with the UPS is for Windows only. For Macs use System Preferences;Energy Saver;UPS. All the necessary adjustments are there. If the UPS is connected to the computer by USB cable the battery status is displayed ion the menu bar. The panel on the UPS tells me the battery is fully charged to run my system for 62 mins, my system is drawing 20% of the maximum power for which it is rated, and the mains supply is currently 241 volts. The UPS is sitting quietly beneath my desk doing what it is supposed to do. UPDATE: Since writing my original review there have been several short power cuts in my village. My UPS has kept my iMac and peripherals running without interruption until the power was restored.

I needed a decent yet good value UPS unit to protect my computer and network equipment in the event of a power outage and the 900va version does the job absolutely brilliantly. I particularly want something that in the event of an extended power outage will allow me to shut down the computer and then continue to operate the network switches and clock radio for another few hours. The compact size and shape of this unit means I've easily managed to hide it behind my desk out of sight so you don't even know it's there. When the UPS isn't doing anything (i.e. just running off mains waiting for a power outage) it is completely silent - no fans or anything. When it's running off the battery powering my equipment during a mains outage it does make a noticeable buzzing noise but can easily sleep with it in the same room. I find with it powering two TP-Link Power-Over-Ethernet Switches, one bedside clock/radio and two IP cameras the battery lasts about 3 hours 40 minutes from fully charged to flat. If I have my desktop computer and monitor turned on idling as well then battery life works out at 35 minutes precisely - more than enough time to save work and shut down. My Windows 7 desktop PC treats the UPS in the same way as a laptop would treat it's own battery with no additional software or drivers required (i.e. just use the supplied cable to connect the Data port on the UPS to a spare USB port on your computer, then open the Windows Control Panel > Power Options and you'll see you now have separate settings for mains power and battery power). I haven't bothered installing the supplied PowerChute Personal software as Windows 7's power settings are sufficient for my needs. Some other reviews mention their PC's freezing when running off the UPS power due to the modified sine wave power output. I've not experienced any problems whatsoever. Specs - Corsair RM550 power supply, Intel Core i5 4690 CPU with onboard graphics, 8GB RAM, 1x SSD + 3x 7200rpm hard drives, 22 inch monitor drawing about 85 watts when idle. By default the UPS emits a loud beep every few seconds during a power outage however you can permanently silence it by holding down the mute button on the front panel for a couple of seconds. Although the UPS comes with 2x IEC C14 Male-Female kettle leads for connecting it to a PC or monitor, it does not come with its own mains power cable so you'll need to source one separately. Fortunately I had plenty of kettle leads lying around. Finally, if APC happen to read this there's one feature suggestion I'd like to make for a future version of this product - since as many gadgets these days run off 12v DC anyway (routers, network switches, CCTV cameras etc) can you include a 2.1mm 12v DC socket to run such equipment directly off the battery (and turn off the inverter to save battery if there's nothing wanting to draw power from the 240v sockets) rather than losing efficiency converting the battery up to 240v then back down to 12v again.

Just using this to guard against (probably intentional) power test outages in my department while I'm travelling. Simply backing up a high performance desktop. Very easy to set up physically. I've tried experiments where I've switched off power at the mains and it picked up the slack without any trouble, which is the main thing. Feels solid - looks pretty decent. Allows the alarms to be silenced during sleeping ours. Software user interface could have been simplified (for the home user - if you manage a bunch of computers then the tools for monitoring costs might be more relevant). The link on their software page for Powerchute Personal edition didn't seem to work but their (very responsive) tech support sent me a direct link.

Not the cheapest unit, but the APC brand is worth a bit more in my experience. It's a nice unit with a decent enough selection of outlets. The front panel display is nice, showing interesting things like line voltage, time on battery, etc. Obviously a UPS is only any good when it's needed... and a couple of days after I bought it, we had a series of power cuts. The APC box did really well... it's powering a small server, network switch and broadband router. With the power off, it provides a solid 70-80 minutes of offline power. Plenty of time to work out if there's a problem or whether someone just plugged a faulty kettle in! Occasionally, I've seen the box kick in when the line voltage fluctuates, so it's nice to see that it's helping filter out oddball issues like brownouts as well as being there for full-on failures. I've revised my review after getting new cables for this unit! DO NOT USE K15IEC DOSS Iec Plug to 240V Socket - 15Cm Lead - Iec-C14 Short UPS Lead Ideal for Connecting a Standard Powerboard to a UPS. Noticed that I could hear "sparking noises" when brushing up against the cables or simply moving the unit. It appears the outlet ports are not snug enough for STANDARD power connector cables, so power cuts off if unit is moved or cables moved in ANYWAY. Got new cables and unit works as expected, so glad for that

Dies ist nun meine dritte APC Notstromversorgung. Ich habe nun den Typ Pro 550 gekauft. Bereits im Einsatz habe ich den Typ Pro 900 und den älteren Typ (weiße Serie) CS 650. Der weiße Typ ist ca. 10 Jahre im Einsatz und einmal erst mußte die Batterie gewechselt werden. Daneben habe ich noch 4 weitere Notstromversorgungen eines 'billigeren' Anbieters. Aber wie fast überall im Leben: Wer billig kauft, muß doppelt zahlen. Daher werden die Billig USVs nun nach und nach durch diese APC USVs aus der Pro-Serie ersetzt. Aufgrund baulicher Gegebenheiten paßt die Pro 900 (Tiefe des Gerätes) nicht in alle Computerracks hinein, sodaß ich nun auf die Pro 550 ausgewichen bin. Was ich hier rezensiere paßt also sowohl für den Typ 900 als auch den Typ 550. Gründe für APC: 1. Diese Notstromversorgungen arbeiten absolut perfekt. Sowohl die aus der Pro Serie, als auch die weiße Serie (CS 650). 2. Die Originalbatterien halten sehr lange - trotzdem habe ich nun nach 6 Jahren eine NoName Batterie in die CS 650er eingebaut, die nun auch schon wieder 4 Jahre alt ist. Der wöchentliche automatische Batterietest sagt: OK 3. Die Leistungsangaben entsprechen genau dem, was auch angegeben ist. Dies ist bei meinen LowCost USVs nicht der Fall. 4. Ganz wichtig: Die Lastmessungen stimmen! Zum Vergleich habe ich mir von meiner Firma einen kalibrierten Leistungsmesser ausborgen können. Das, was die Pro-Serie im Display anzeigt, stimmt auf 2 bis 3 Watt mit dem kalibrierten Referenzgerät überein. Das ist sehr beachtlich und zeigt eins ums andere Mal die Qualität der APC USVs. 5. Warum die Lastangabe wichtig ist? Daraus errechnet die Software die Shut-Down Zeit für den sichern Shut-Down (ordentliches Herunterfahren) der angeschlossenen Hardware. Zum Vergleich die LowCost USVs: Die zeigen 40% bis 60% mehr Last an, als tatsächlich angeschlossen ist. Also statt z.B. 65W wird 90W angezeigt und somit fährt die USV-Software den PC viel zu früh herunter. Fast könnte man meinen, das wäre ein Angstfaktor bei der LowCost USV, daß die Leistung nicht gebracht wird, die auf dem Typenschild steht. Bei APS wird die Batterie so weit ausgereizt, wie man das in der Software einstellt. Man bekommt bei APC nicht nur verläßliche Daten (Display oder Software) angezeigt, die APC funktioniert auch genauso sicher. 6. APC wird auch von anderen Geräten über USB erkannt (z.B. die QNAP Datensicherungsstationen). Von denen habe ich hier 7 Stück im Einsatz. An einem Qnap ist die APC per USB angeschlossen und die anderen Qnaps lesen den Betriebsstatus der APC USV zuverlässig aus (z.B. Laufzeiterwartung bei momentaner Last). Die Qnaps unterhalten sich per Netzwerkverkabelung - alle Qnaps hängen an einer Stromleiste, die von der USV versorgt wird. Die Einstellungen (am Qnap) sehen sowohl das nacheinander Herunterfahren, wie auch das nacheinander Hochfahren vor. 7. Meine Daten vertraue ich nur noch APC an. Vor ein paar Tagen ging in einer der LowCost USVs der Leistungsmesser defekt. Gut, daß kann auch bei APC passieren. Elektronik kann natürlich defekt gehen. Aber nun (da die angeschlossenen Geräte als Last nicht mehr erkannt werden) gibt die LowCost USV an, die Laufzeit wäre 100 Minuten. Tatsächlich sind es aber nur 7 Minuten. Auf so etwas kann ich verzichten. 8. Eine APC ist auch als Stand-Alone USV (also ohne PC) im Keller im Einsatz und zwar puffert die mir den Breitband-Kabelanschluß, den der Breitband Kabelanbieter im Keller installiert hat. Fällt das aus, ist Telefon, Internet und alles weg! Und dazu kommt: Ist der Strom wieder da, dauert es bis zu 20 Minuten, bis Telefon und Internet wieder funktionsfähig sind (Bootvorgang, Daten in den Router bzw. das Breitband-Modem laden usw.). Mit einer 'dicken' APC habe ich hier Überbrückungszeiten von bis zu 40 Minuten. Zeit genug, für Reparaturabschaltungen für z.B. Deckenlampen-Montagen im Hause. 9. Die drei APC USVs arbeiten geräuschlos! Beim Aufladen der Batterien ist ein Sirren zu hören (z.B. wenn die USV neu ist) - was aber nach und nach leiser wird und verschwindet. Ist die Batterie voll, sind auch die Geräusche weg. Im Notstrombetrieb hört man die USV (natürlich). Aber das ist auch der Notfall und nicht die Standard-Betriebsart. Man sollte sich nach dem ersten Einschalten nicht verrückt machen lassen, wenn dann Geräusche zu hören sind. Das ist völlig normal im Ladebetrieb und nach ein paar Stunden hört man weniger oder gar nichts mehr ... 10. Bei der Pro Serie ist z.B. der Master-Slave Switch sehr angenehm. Am Slave hängen die Peripherie (Lautsprecher, Scanner, Printer usw.) Schalte ich den PC ab, wird auch die Peripherie nach einer bestimmten (einstellbaren) Zeit abgeschaltet. Die Schwelle ist ebenfalls einstellbar. Also entfällt auch die teure Master-Slave Steckdosenleiste zukünftig an den PCs. Also 'spart' die vermeintlich teurere APC auch durch nicht (mehr) benötigte externe Schaltkomponenten. Also mein Fazit: Einmal APC USV - immer APC USV und auch dann, wenn die ein klein wenig teurer, als LowCost USVs sind. Aber zweimal kaufen, weil ich wieder am falschen Ende gespart habe - das will ich nicht mehr. Also, die anderen USVs werden nach und nach auf diese APC aus der Pro-Serie umgestellt. Das ist mir eine zuverlässige Betriebsart es wert. Ob die Geräteschutzversicherung Sinn macht, mag ich nicht zu beurteilen - aber ich benutze die APC USVs, damit ich 'Stromsicherheit' habe und nicht um eine 'Versicherungsleistung' einzukaufen. [...]

There are times when a bigger UPS is just not affordable or practical for several reasons. I am running a small home lab and needed for up time. 2200VA UPS is expensive and you need access to a higher capacity electrical circuit. This unit contains 4 batteries and connects to the external battery connecter on the BR1500G UPS. I like the pure sine wave of the APC 1500MS2 UPS but, they don't have option of connecting an external battery pack.

Now this does it job and just keeps on doing what its made for.

This unit is a 240 volt unit and there is no way to switch it over to 120 volt. This will not work in the US. It does not list this fact anywhere on the product description. Also you can not return this item to Amazon because it is considered a "hazardous material". To be fair to the item when I had it out of the box it seemed very well made and exactly what I wanted barring the whole 240 volt issue. Nice and small. The controls and display worked nicely. I was able to use it a little bit because there was a charge in the battery.
