Q: Can this linen be used for canvases? I thought if I stretch it on bars and prime it - it's kind of the same thing.

Its a fine smooth linen. I think it would cope with stretching and priming. I stretched mine over a board and glued a small oil painting on it without sag. Hope that helps.

Q: Is this fabric pre washed

No its soft but stiff. I rinsed mine in warm water and it was fine afterwards.
