Where can i find a replacement lid?

I agree with all these answers. The lid isn't great and definitely not liquid tight like the oil or milk jugs, but it works to stop spashes. You can tell from the minute you put it on it's not going to stop oil from leaking out if it's on it's side. Still, be a little more careful with it so it doesn't leak all over your truck bed or car (I'd say do the same thing with batteries and anything else that you don't want to risk having to clean up). Putting something over the opening definitely will help but still wouldn't flip it over. I've had mine for 15 years and just happened to see this so thought I'd reply. My lid has a thread stripped now, so it's not super tight but I still use it all the time. If you lost the lid, just put some saran or plastic on it and use a tie wrap to tighten it down.

Are there gradations that allow one to measure the volume actually in the container?

No measurement possible this and there's leaking problem. the Cap and around neck surfaces must be smooth to prevent leaks. But too rough and no seal with this.

Do you think or know if i could use to hold gas?

Technically it is illegal to transport gas in anything that is not labeled gasoline and therefor I would steer clear of putting gas in it. Gotta bite the bullet and pay for the higher priced gas cans.

Can kerosene go in here? Replacement pump for heater is too large for regular kerosene container openings.

You can put Kerosene in it, but Kerosine jugs, or cans are Blue. It's up too you if you want to do that. I have to tell you that I bought this jug and found the cap on top did not seal good, letting oil to spill out. The one I got had a pour design for the lid.
