Aero Hydrodynamics & The Perform/Sailing
T**H
Current Technology of Sail
This book is not for everyone. The author is involved in academic research and is a consulting engineer whose practice is at the cutting edge of the science of yacht design. Aero-Hydrodynamics is primarily written for others who share his passion and sophisticated level technical expertise. But if you have a technical background and enjoy articles Scientific American, the book is full of diagrams and illustrations. The caveat: the text is often preoccupied with technical issues which are conveyed by frequent mathematical equations. If you are a sailor looking for a better understanding of the physics of sailing, the how and why of making a boat sail fast, then "The Symmetry of Sailing" by Ross Garrett is not as lavishly illustrated, but it would be a far better choice. If Professor Fossati's calculus is a foreign language for you, but you want a peek into the theoretical world of science, you can focus on his book's graphics and concentrate on their message. At the very least you will have been able to visit with a designer at the highest level of the sport of sailing. For naval architects and engineers, this is the "must have" book on sailing. It doesn't get any better than this - even if I did not understand a word he said.

While quite technical for the lay person, there appendices that helped me get upto speed on the physics. Most people with an appreciation for physics and math should be able to pick up the material in the book. I picked this up for help in designing RC racing boats, and I have gleaned quite a bit from the book.

As technical as you can get, even so as accessible as it can be made into these technical literature without losing it`s focus and essence. Essencial when you need to get further into knowledge in the matter
