U.D.O. live plus videos, clips, photos, and bonus audio . . .
Udo Dirkschneider's brutal singing style, was a trademark of the German heavy metal band Accept. Dirkschneider parted ways with Accept in the late 80's to form his own group U.D.O., and has continued to produce the same kind of hard, punishing, metal for over twenty years, up to the present. This DVD, Nailed to Metal . . . the complete history (2003) is a very solid package, that covers material up to the studio album Holy, released in 1999. The DVD includes a 45 minute live performance, official music videos, videos of live performances, promotional pieces, and miscellaneous footage of the band. There is also a photo gallery, a discography with song lyrics, band member bios, audio tracks, and web links. The concert called 'Live From Russia', is nicely produced and edited, with good coverage of the band. Video quality varies, as the footage from some of the cameras is not the greatest, with lack of sharpness and some visual defects. The sound mix is good, and Udo's vocals are not drowned out. Udo, who often sings with his eyes closed, seems energetic and animated, his gravelly voice as strong as ever. The band consists of Stefan Kaufmann and Igor Gianola on guitar, Fitty Wienhold on bass, and Lorenzo Miliani on drums. They are not flashy, but simply play some very powerful, sledgehammer metal. The nine song setlist includes, Holy, Raiders of Beyond, Midnight Mover, Independence Day, Metal Eater, Winter Dreams, Shout It Out, Cut Me Out, and I'm A Rebel. There are ten music related videos, including the music videos for They Want War, Break The Rules, Heart of Gold, and Independence Day. Other clips of interest include a vintage live performance of Go Back to Hell from 1988, and a video press kit for the album Timebomb. Also included are some fun videos shot on the road in America and Russia, as well as Udo making a tandem parachute jump. The footage from Russia is particularly interesting. There are also seven audio tracks, x-t-c, The Key, Mad Dogs and Loaded Guns (demo), Warchild (demo), Rated X (demo), Tough Luck (demo), and Recall The Sin (demo). This is a nice collection for hardcore U.D.O. fans. It is a little short on live material, and an interview with Herr Dirkschneider would have been nice, but there are still some other cool things to view, and listen to. Unfortunately the DVD's menus are not very user friendly, are slow to operate, and can get tedious.
