Muddy Sound
I got this collection a while back and just started listening to it the other day. I'm relatively unfamiliar with a lot of the songs except for the bands' biggest hits like "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and "Promised You A Miracle." After listening to a few tracks I began thinking "Wow, these songs aren't very good. I wonder why people think this band is so great." Then it occurred to me that I couldn't actually make out what was being sung. The instrumental parts of the songs were very loud, but the vocals sound mumbled, like when you're listening to a speaker located in another room. You can hear that words are being sung and you can make out parts of the chorus and words at the ends of the verses, but the actual verses are very muddy unless you're concentrating very hard. Then it occurred to me that something might be wrong with the audio because I've never had this problem before. Another reviewer mentioned that distortion is present due to over compression during the remastering. I would say that this is definitely the case. I can hear the distortion! I would advise against purchasing this collection unless you already know all the words and you don't need to hear them that precisely.

Awful
Simple Minds had one respectable hit; "Don't You (forget about me)". They were one of the quintessential 80s bands I used to hear played on the radio, and in heard their famous "Don't You" song in more than one movie, and promos regarding whatever. Of course there was the MTV video, but I had never heard any of their other work.Until now.And I'm sorry I did. I can only assume that "Don't You" was written by either their producer or contracted out to another artist because they needed a hit. And that was their one hit, unlike a lot of other 80s bands that had maybe two or three, along with a collection of other decent songs.I listened through this entire collection, thinking I would get more catchy profound tunes that had a lot of angst and hope both.Nope.I rarely put down artists, but when I was coming of age in the 80s all kinds of bands had all kinds of good songs. "YES", the Cars, Cheap Trick, Human League, Thompson Twins, Berlin, and just a host of others. The 80s was really a good time to be alive. Truly it was with the explosion of artistry in action and scifi films (and drama), and the virtual explosion of good music just coming out every week. It seemed like every month there was a really good new song. Regrettably this band had only one. At least it came out in the 80s, for what it's worth.Oh well.Avoid this thing. Grab the single of "Don't You", then move onto another band.

Lots of good songs on this double CD
I never really listened to this band when they were popular, but I must admit that put out a lot of good music. This double CD is full of hit songs. The first CD has some of the most popular songs, such as "Sactify yourself", "Don't you (forget about me), All the things that she said, and "Alive and kicking". The second CD has songs that I was not familiar with. They are not bad songs, but I would say that they are more muted. I guess that if you are a real Simple Minds fan then you are probably more familiar with songs like "Biko", "Belfast Child" and "War babies". I should listen to the second CD more to really give it an honest evaluation.

~ SIMPLE MINDS "The Best Of" is outstanding! ~
Having been a fan of this group for most of their career in the '80s and '90s, I would say this is the BEST compilation they have out in their career. It is 2 CDS housed in a nice 2 sleeve jewel case with fabulous liner notes. The 2 CDS are black in color.First CD is songs they had, most, if not all their hits, are on CD 1.Second CD is I would say most of their material after 1990. Both sound superb. I did not notice anything wrong with the recordings such as the CDs themselves being TOO LOUD. Sometimes, a newer version of an album can be made with it being extremely loud to the point of the song being distorted at levels. This is NOT the case with this BEST OF edition.I highly recommend getting THIS Edition, if you don't have most of their albums already. It is well worth it!

Great music, disappointing re-master.
If you are looking at this, you are hopefully aware that Simple Minds is one of the finest bands responsible for ushering in the New Wave rock era. No music library containing this genre would be complete without a large dose of Simple Minds. This 2-CD set contains an excellent selection of some of the finest compositions from this band. My only complaint is that this re-mastering of the original recordings is not very good; therefore only 4 stars. The levels are too high resulting in loss of headroom, added distortion and perceived excessive compression. This is most unfortunate. Damn you Virgin Records for damaging what was so perfect at the start. However, if you are not an audio purist (snob) like me, you will love this CD set (and I do). I highly recommend it as a convenient source for the history of this band's finest works. Additionally, if you do not own their CD "Real Life", it is a must have and is not covered in this collection. So, buy both, you will not be sorry.

Deliciously Put Together...
All I can say is this is just a fantastic display of one of the best bands that ever existed in modern music. Not necessarily in chronological order of the bands progression from their early years, it still carries their greatest work. Signature sound that is incredibly uniquely Simple Minds - NOTHING Simple about this band!!! Amazing. <3

Crank it up!
This collection of songs is just great. From "See the Lights", "Mandela", "Biko", "Let there be Love" to the classic released in America "Don't You Forget about Me" ... so many ... well worth the price ... I daresay, better than U2.
