Wish there were more performances, but what can you do for an introductory text. Sure it may take some folks (like me) awhile to get used to the mechanics of not using a pick and with all those extra fingers but it's well worth the effort. Once you get going though expect to devour this guide quickly, I'm looking for a more advanced book now. Review: Got Me Started - I loved how this book takes you from the very beginning from the mechanics of the fingerstyle technique through exercises and combinations of patterns via chord forms. The book covers Hammer-Ons and Pull-offs! Each example lesson is clear and concise and offers tips in preparation of the next movement. I also like how he recommends listening to popular musicians tunes which references his lessons. For instance, Blackbird by The Beatles uses mini-chords that require you to fret two notes. He'll give you exercises using mini-chord shapes while exploring the neck to the 12th fret. Simple voicing! Your given lots of ideas to add to your fingerstyle acoustic playing.

Used it 3 years ago and found it practical and easy. Got me going and I play more advanced level now. Often refer back to itas the patterns are easy to use or for warmup. Good work!

Not a lot of material in book
Offers some nice tips and basics but doesn’t go in to detail like some other books. Very small book but still worth more then a 20 first lesson

Very clear, step by step, fun!!
This is the third book I’ve ordered in the last 2 weeks and well worth the extra money since this is exactly what I wanted - pattern styles more geared to folk and rock. I first bought Tommy Emmanuel’s book, which is an excellent book, but his insistence on using a thumb pick, an emphasis on creating the “boom-chick” rhythm and using a “palm mute” are all reminiscent of Travis and Country-style. Folk, Rock, Country, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic are all iconic forms, and each one has its own unique rhythms and picking styles. For beginners just learning chords or past that wanting to learn finger-picking, either way it’s important to start with the right book. A lot of the books have cue-words on the front cover like “Travis-picking” or “Folk/Rock style” so you have a pretty good idea what to expect inside. Also quite a few don’t, and that alone should give pause. With so many differences in style and technique, beginners need to choose carefully. The 3 books I just bought all start with VERY different approaches to learning basic picking. This book I’m reviewing here explained it right in the title!!

Very good intro, helps!
As a beginning classical guitar student, I wanted to know mre about fingerpicking styles. Ordered this for myself, and the Advanced version for my teacher. Both very good. Found a couple of errors in the book, but they were pretty easily recognized copy/paste errors. I have a growing collection of Fundamental Changes books, and they are generally very good! Much of the material in this book is masterable without tearing your hair out, and the sequence the material is presented is very good for building skills, up to the "finale" performance piece which puts together all of the material into a pleasant composition. Recommended. (as an aside, I have about a year of experience)

Good basics
Relearning after many years, and this is good for remembering basics, getting those fingers limber, and learning some nice picking patterns.
