It’s a solid bar, so the weight is evenly spread across the bar. It has a total weight of 30lbs.

Q: What is a good weight to start with for beginners?

I use these bars in weight class all the time - if a 5 lb dumbbell weight is comfortable for you to use, then start with a 10 lb bar - you will be holding it with both hands, so each hand would have 5 lbs of weight. I will also say, I never did any weight training before, and started with the 10 lb bar - and even use it today (6 mo later), for warming up. I now use the 15-20 lb bar for serious work, like lunges and squats (with it over my shoulders).
