A beautiful spiritual journey
This is a beautiful story of the spiritual journey of a young American Indian. He lived before the Spanish arrived in what became LA County, California. This story brought home to me how many Indians lived in a spiritual world that is mainly unknown today. I was very impressed with the amount of research the author must have done to compose such a realistic story and take me on this journey. Having grown up in LA County, I found it fascinating to look at how life was lived in this area when the only humans that lived here were American Indians.. A very enjoyable read!

Fast read creatively written
I would like to read more by this author. Beliefs of spirit occupancy within human, animal, and other natural life is a source unlike what is read in the Christian faith because greed had already drowned respect of all humanity.

Engrossing, Spiritual...
I love the spiritual aspect of this story and agree with the review, which describes the author's prose as unpretentious. It's beautifully written and captures the reverence of the un-materialistic American Indian culture in Southern California, which is not discussed or taught in schools. This one will stay with me and inspire me to know more about Native American culture.

I would have loved for it to have been longer as it ended ...
I found this novel very engaging. You get a glimpse into the life of a young warrior-to-be as he learns many lessons of life. I would have loved for it to have been longer as it ended before I would have liked. I definitely recommend this one for all ages.

but you also feel the love and respect he feels for his family
This book puts you in the mind of a young adult Native American. His uncle is a shaman from another tribe and he has been coming periodically to teach his nephew to be an adult. Uncle has not allowed him to take the classes to be initiated into adulthood because he wants him to be truly ready to be a responsible member of the tribe. The author lets you feel the frustration and confusion of this young man, but you also feel the love and respect he feels for his family. You get to experience some of the lessons he goes through. The book is relatively short, but packed with information. When I got to the end, I was disappointed because I wanted more.

Predictable.
Quite predictable for adults but would be appropriate reading for young teens. Nice introduction to the life of the American Indians who resided in Southern California for several thousand years.

Beautiful Story
This is a wonderful story that illuminates the life of Native Americans at an earlier, more spiritual time. I loved the fact that the author was able to use actual Indian language (Tongva) throughout the book (glossary included), basically as synonyms, so they blended easily into the narrative. Lamont has done her research and the land, plants and culture are all described beautifully. The illustrations are superb and enhance the text. I recommend this book to children of any age who are interested in Native Americans, particularly of the West Coast of the now United States. How quickly we forget what life was like only a few centuries ago.
