A smashing good time
My 3+ year old loves tools and this was recommended to me by another parent who has older children who also loved theirs. The board is like cork or "peg board". The hammer is simple wood as are the shapes. Each shape has a small hole fit for the nails to set in... BEWARE, these are real nails and they are small! Perfect for little hands and for getting lost in a carpet only to be found at a later time by an unsuspecting foot. I solved this issue with an Altoids tin and a small magnet to keep all the nails together. A Ziplock bag will also work as there are a lot of small parts so use good judgment as to when your kids are ready for something like this.

Great skills development for little 2-D builders
I ordered this as a gift for my son's classmate (as well as for another of his friends a few months ago) and it was sent to us promptly. One of his friends who turned 4 when we gave it to him loved it, according to his parents. I can't vouch for this specific box, but I can say that my son has a similar Nagelspiel from Haba (contains less pieces where the instructions show how to make cars) and he likes it a lot. The nails are really tiny, so should not be opened near small children as they can fall and easily get lost/eaten. Also, they require coordination to place the nails in the pieces, which is why my 3.5 year old finds it (positively) challenging. I was impressed that he could follow the picture instructions, but he also likes to improvise his creations, which I like, then he hangs them on his wall! I'm always with him, though when he plays with it.

Love this toy
My 3 yrs old loves it. At first we worry about too many small pieces but she loves too play this and put everything back to the box.

Open ended, fine motor fun
My 2.5 year old loves this. She loves the small parts, loves to make designs, loves to hammer the little nails. Tricky part: the box doesn't work well as a container for the small parts--they get stuck and fall out and such. We added little boxes to hold the small stuff inside.

Difficult for small hands
Purchased for my 4 year old . She plays with it ever so often but it's pretty hard for her to hammer the tiny nails .

Creative Toy
This is one of my grandson's favorite creative toy/games at preschool. The teacher told me it would be next to impossible to find this item. Amazon had it-my grandson got it for Christmas-and he is thrilled. It is fun and a good learning item that teaches shapes and patterns.

My kids love the toy but several pieces from the 2 sets I ordered snapped in half on the first use. The shapes themselves are not very sturdy.
