Our favorite floor bed
This floor mattress is so comfortable- I think it is more comfortable than a typical bed or sofa for sleeping. I would recommend using a waterproof mattress protector and fitted sheet (regular full size fits the full mattress) as a cover. For a while I used to try to always use the slip cover (the zipper one that covers both sides) but it is too much of a pain in my opinion, especially if you are frequently changing the linens for young kids. I lay this atop a wool rug, and fold it up during the day. The full size easily folds into quarters and it can be stored behind a sofa. If you have a double bed it can also be stored as a topper. It’s a super comfy spot to watch movies and also great extra bed. I put it out in the sun sometimes to air it out. I have had three of these over years and can vouch for this model and brand. My cats also love it, we went without one for a short bit and they were so excited when the new one came in. The only downfall and reason I have had to repurchase is if you have pets or kids that have accidents- it is somewhat cleanable with an upholstery vacuum and enzyme cleaner along with sunning but at a certain point I just say ‘enough’ and replace it.

A highly recommended futon!
I feel that this futon needs an actual review. I have slept on this futon for about 3 weeks now and I tell you what, it is as comfortable as any mattress I've had that is fairly firm. BACKGROUND ON ME: I slept on a brick for a mattress for 8 months and then a ridiculously soft mattress for 2 weeks after that prior to sleeping on this futon and sleeping on a soft mattress killed my back but I became accustomed to it quickly. I was moving into a very small space and since I'm in college I'll be moving at least once or twice more, and one of those possibly being overseas so compactness and versatility is definitely necessary. MY SLEEP EXPERIENCE: Having adjusted to a soft mattress prior to sleeping on this meant that I was definitely in for an adjustment period. It didn't take very long to adjust to it and I still find myself sleeping on my side and it's no less comfortable than sleeping on my back or stomach, though this is likely due to the fact that I have a firm side-sleeping pillow. I find myself getting very restful sleep and as much as I'm afraid of bugs, since you need to take good care of the flooring you place the futon on I don't feel concerned about bugs. FUTON QUALITY: It's very thick, I think I would've had issues sleeping on my side had I purchased the Rococo version of this futon. It's very nice thick cotton and it folds very easily, especially since it came folded in the package it arrived in. Even though it folds, there's really no noticeable fold flattening where the cotton kind of thins because its been folded so many times. YOUR OPTIONS: So there are other options on the futon market, there's the J-life shiki-futon which in my opinion looks like the cotton is going to flatten out or get all moved around inside and become bumpy in places. The Tuft & Needle mattress, I feel, can no longer be listed as a futon mattress, it is far to wide to fold and was never really meant to be a tri-fold mattress of any sort. I can easily see this futon mattress from EMOOR lasting several years if not many if you take care of it right (If I remember it, I'll come back at a later date and update how the quality is holding up). MY OPINION: I spent almost 4 months trying to determine what/which futon mattress to buy because I knew I wanted to move either cross-country or across the world and with a futon I could take it with me more easily than a traditional mattress. It also makes moving apartments way easier! All that being said, I think if you're set on buying a futon because they're just awesome and space-saving, save yourself the time and frustration of decision-making and get this. I feel like I'm sleeping more restfully now because I'm not sleeping on a mattress that is a brick but also not sleeping on jello. PS: It will say that it's going to take a month to arrive or longer but EMOOR used expedited international shipping so I got it in just under 2 weeks. Below is the mattress cover I purchased, it's more expensive than a normal fitted sheet but it has a zipper closure and is very nice, it has a wonderful clean cotton-y feel and keeps both sides of my futon off the floor and more resistant to any mites or bacteria on the floor. Emoor 100% Cotton Cover Single for Traditional Japanese Floor Futon, Anti-Bacterial & Mite-Resistant & Odor-Resistant, Black Made in JAPAN Good luck on your futon hunting everyone!

Quality and Satisfaction = Happy Soul Traveler!
I just received my mattress after ordering 5 days ago. It came in a large Amazon box and two inner packaging to protect the mattress. I ordered this mattress for a self built camper van. After opening the mattresses I was very pleasantly surprised as this mattress had quality written all over it. The mattress expanded immediately and I couldn’t wait so I did a quick test by laying down on it. I have a very quality expensive mattress for my bedroom an this tatami mattress felt like heaven. I wanted to sleep on it right away, but knew I had to air it out. There is not order, just normal as if you were opening a package of clean sheets. I don’t a good review for a product often as I seldom come across a product that WOW’s me to this extent. But for the price, this was satisfaction and beyond. I was begrudgingly hesitant about paying for shipping. But after seeing the Amazon driver lug this to my door and seeing the care they took and cute little thank you for buying our product, the cost of shipping was worth it. Can’t wait to put to use in my Ford Transit camper van! I hear people with camper vans complain about their bed and how uncomfortable it is, hmm I guess they should give this product a try. I’ll come back and change my review once I get about a gold month of sleep on it. But if it’s this luxurious and comfy right out of the box, I don’t think I will. Remember, home is where you park it! Travel well, leave nature how you found it and respect the wildlife as it’s their plant/home too!

A little too compressible for me, but still a very nice shikifuton.
I was looking for a replacement to our latex mattress which is a bit too soft for me and my wife. We got it during the pandemic and it was nice. I knew we should have returned it right away as it was already a bit too soft for us. But the mattress company doesn’t take returns, they wanted us to just throw away the old mattress and show it in the trash and they would send us a new firmer one. I felt that was a waste of landfill space and opted not to get the firmer mattress. So here we are 2 years later and the old latex mattress is just a bit too soft for my wife and cannot sleep on her back or else she will wake up with back pain. So I found this along with other Made In Japan Shikifuton mattresses or pad, and was really interested in it. My wife and I have traveled to Japan before and had slept in a very traditional ryokan or Japanese inn, and were quite comfortable sleeping on the floor on the futon. So I went for it and bought this one, it was quite a bit more expensive than that next one, but it is a true queen size. I also liked the construction of it, not too heavy or light. It came in a plastic vacuum packed bag, which was then nicely wrapped in one of those brown fiber paper bag material. Inside the bag was the shikifuton’s fitted sheet, light gray in color. Nicely sewn no loose threads. Once the bag was opened the futon immediately started to puff up and expand. It had just a hint of of the foam smell but after about 5-10 minutes it had dissipated and was gone. I will say that I also had the sliding door open to get rid of the smell a bit. It also had an initial dampness to the futon, but after the smell was gone the dampness was gone as well. My wife really loves this futon and she sleeps so very soundly on it, but she also likes to sleep on the floor. So this is just heaven for her. As for me I do prefer a bit more cushioning, but I’m a bit bigger and much heavier than my wife, 5’10”, 210lbs. So it is a bit of an adjustment for me, but sleeping better. So my wife is more the average size of a typical Japanese person 5’2” 130 lbs. I will say there is a bit of a break in period for your body if you are not used to a more firm mattress. Also depends what you are putting the futon on as the underlayment. I made a make shift tatami mat of two IKEA childrens sleeping pads and then two ply korean floor mats to raise us off the concrete and carpet for now. I have not replaced the old mattress we were using and we are currently sleeping in the living room floor. Now it is only the second night we have slept on it and so far so good. I do wake up a bit stiff and sore as I’m a side sleeper. So I have opted for a taller pillow, to make up for the extra firmness in the futon and I think I might have found the right combo of pillows. Now just a few more nights to get my fat body used to the firmness. But I don’t wake up feeling like I slept in a hammock.

Defective Product, Refused Refund
If you’ve never slept on a floor mattress, you are seriously missing out. Firm but supportive, high quality ones will truly change your sleeping experience. I was looking forward to that with this product however, the one I received was not only not to the measurements specified (which is a very little concern at the end of the day), but the foam did not expand properly even with the appropriate waiting time, room humidity, and ambient temperature. The reason for the one star is simply the refusal of their customer service to take ownership of the situation, which is confounding because they make the buyer pay for the shipping BOTH ways. So they don’t lose anything because I’m paying for the shipping and they want to leave a defective product out there. This is exceptionally unprofessional, but it won’t change anything because they obviously sell enough that they can ignore outliers. Very disappointed they feel the need to take advantage of people like this.

Happy with the Japanese mattress
I decided to buy this because I have been unhappy with the firmness of my foam mattress and I liked that it was handmade in Japan which conveys a high quality product for me. I slept on it for the first time last night and I had the best sleep in a long time! The mattress is FIRM, just what I wanted. It is very well made and it looks good. I have it on top a bed frame so I won’t be putting it away, but if I had to, the mattress is very manageable. It is pricier than some of the others but for me, I think it’s worth it

Not as shown
I was really excited to find this Japanese futon, it looked great in the pictures. But when it arrived, it wasn’t as thick as shown. It’s advertised as having 3 layers, but it looks and feels more like 2. A bit disappointing, especially considering the price I paid.
