It is not just a ring, like a Richie ring. It has a thick plastic ring with a plastic film in the middle, so the "big fat snare drum" actually covers your existing snare head. I like the way it modifies the sound of the snare. If your looking for a snare head, this not one - again it is placed on top of your existing snare head

In a way, yes, you can definitely play on it, and they have 2 styles, 1 is a full head all the way around, the other is open in the middle, so you can play sticks or brushes, it fits on top of the snare head, no tuning required, slides on and off the head with ease, I have 2 of them, one no middle opening, the other is called steves drum head with the opening in the middle for stick and brush work, a fat beefy sound no ring but does not sound like hitting boxes, hope this helps, Curtis
