Close to original! As a toy!
I was pleasantly surprised that it is close to what I remember from my Slinky in the eighties. It does walk down stairs—but you have to know how to do that. There was always a trick, you had to fling it a little further to get the inertia going! Duh—it’s not gonna go on it’s own with a slight push. I spent hours as a child figuring this out. And it was thrilling when it would get all the way. This is what I experienced with the “new” Slinky as well! Really happy with it!

This is the slinky that walks down stairs alone or in pairs
Thanks to a couple of the other reviews, I've finally found the slinky of old. The Giant Slinky is, in fact, the original slinky. It's made of metal, about 4 inches wide, and really makes that "slinkety sound".I don't think it's as "long" as it was way back when. You can't set it at the top of the stairs and just push it over and watch it walk. You set it on top, and pull about the top half down to the middle of the next step. After that gravity does it's job and it slinks down the stairs. It's awesome and entrancing for any age group.

Good slinky and works great.
I used this slinky on a bird feeder to keep the squares away. So far it is working. I saw a video on Facebook and decided to try it. The feeder is on a tall pole. I fixed the slinky at the top of the pole and let it hang down around the pole. The squirrel tried to climb the pole as usual but was unable to climb it. It really scared him and he ran away. He tried one more time and to my knowledge, has not returned.

Cost-engineered by new owners, but it does work
YES, I was able to make this go down the stairs. Treads are 10" deep and 7.5" high. It took a bit of effort and many tries ... but it DID work. The Slinky itself looks a bit 'ratty' and the box was in worse shape. Someone getting it as a gift would think it was used. The box looks like it was designed for a MUCH larger Slinky lying lengthwise, but when you open the box, the actual Slinky is 'upright.' Kinda deceptive. But I am fine with it.

Awesome, classic toy.
This is an awesome, classic toy. Gave as a gift and was well-received. Still metal, not plastic junk, and still Made in the USA! It does have fewer coils than the original we had as kids, which is too bad, and does affect ability to go down an entire flight of stairs. Still goes down half-flights fine. However, giving all 5 stars for being Made in the USA and being quality metal, as well as affordable.

These ORIGINAL Slinkies are a huge disappointment. Just not as huge as I thought.
The media could not be loaded. After buying the "original" slinky and returning it being very disappointed that it did not go down steps (its most important trick), I bought the "giant" slinky. It does not do much better. In fact, it is twice as much and performs just marginally better. It does one step and quits. Don't these people even TRY the slinky on steps prior to selling it?? I looked for a metal slinky because my grandkids got a plastic slinky and I thought it would be great if they had an ORIGINAL metal slinky. The cheap plastic one performed better. I think this slinky is too short. Not enough coils.I am thinking of returning this "giant" slinky also.--------------------------------------Well...My 8 year old granddaughter came over and she was able to make the giant slinky go down all our carpeted stairs. I am not pleased. How come an 8 year old can make it go down the stairs and a senior citizen with many years of experience with slinkies cannot? It JUST makes it clipping the edge of the stairs, so a higher stack of coils would be more reliable, but she was able to make it work repeatably. I called the factory and talked to the engineer who said that it would not go down carpeted steps in a modern house. Well, my 8 year old granddaughter proved him wrong also.So...I will give it 3 stars.

It works really well, just like I remember when I was a kid
I bought this for my 6-year-old grandson and he LOVED it. We played with it on the stairs for over an hour, then had to try it on the shelves, our hands, the kitchen floor and anywhere else he could think of. He giggled and giggled and giggled. Okay, we both did. It works really well, just like I remember when I was a kid. I've tried the smaller ones, but they have been disappointing so I'm super happy with this one and with the hours of fun it will provide. I love toys that spark a kid's imagination and creativity.

SLINKY PURCHASED REVIEWS
we loved the slinky. unfortunately, while playing with the one it got tangled and we couldn't untangle it. one went in the garbage on the first day. my daughter got very upset. looking back on my childhood i remember the same thing happening to me. the slinky was outstanding quality but if it could be improved as far as the tangling that would make it the best slinky. it's nice to be able to find toys that we played with in our childhood and be able to share the same experiences!!!
