it all depends on personal preference, the lighter the pick the more thinner and flexible it is while the heavier pick will be thicker and more stiff, it all comes down to how it feels in your hand and how comfortable you are when using it, i hope this answers your questions, a good thing about the variety pack is you get a good range of different picks to try out, you may like different pick for electric guitar over acoustic, same with bass.

Are the thick or thin picks better for mandolin?

That depends on the player and their approach to their instrument. A thinner pick would be easier on the strings and produce a slightly sloppy pick sound than a thicker pick; which would be louder and have less pink noise. So take your pick.

The thinnest one in the pack is .58mm; I have it right by me and checked. They're flexible but I wouldn't say they're "really flexible", I guess that comes down to opinion. Keep in mind this is a variety pack so I wouldn't buy the whole pack just for one pick, it's more of a sampler to try out a lot of different ones to see what you like the best and then buy that kind in bulk. If you do a search on Amazon for .38mm guitar picks I believe you will find some super thin picks like you're talking about :)
