Much tastier than other oatmeal!
I cook these in our Zojirushi rice cooker, which has a "porridge" setting. The steel cut oats are delicious, with rich creamy flavor and a nice springy bite. It's hat springy bite that's so different from other oatmeals. You'll enjoy these. (If you have a Zojirushi rice cooker, try the "porridge" setting... but be patient as that is not a FAST way to get these steel cut oats ready. It takes about 40 minutes, maybe 45. The timer will show a longer time than that when you start the cycle, but it adjusts and re-thinks and gets it done a little quicker than its first guess. You can cook 'em much faster on a stovetop, of course, but I let the Japanese engineers at Zojirushi and their cooker's software handle the whole process and the oats are cooked to perfection.)

My Favorite GF Oats
I really like starting my day with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free steel cut oats. I started ordering this four pack three years ago, at the start of Covid. Aside from when out of town, I’ve eaten this, on average, 6 out of 7 days every week for the last three years. My favorite way of making them is with blueberries and brown sugar. Occasionally, I’ll make it with chopped apples, sliced bananas or strawberries. The price has generally been between $17.50 and $19 for the box. Unfortunately, that has recently changed and I can only find it for over $30 for the box. Perhaps there’s a shortage? That’s around a 65% increase. Perhaps all good things (price) must come to an end. Aside from the (hopefully temporary) price increase, a minor negative is the time it takes to make them. However, I’ve done it so many times that I have a routine that works for me. It’s really a great way to start the day. I feel energized for hours. I think eating them has helped with my cholesterol. Plus, I’m getting a good amount of antioxidants and vitamins from all the berries I eat.

I love steel cut oats. But beware of overcooking in a slow cooker.
After about 8 hours on low in my slow cooker, the oats had lost the al dente texture I love. They were on the verge of becoming a gelatinous goo. The package said to use 3 cups water to 1 cup oats on the stovetop but 4:1 in a slow cooker. This seemed backward to me, so I started out with 6 cups of water and 2 cups of oats. Later, I added one more cup of hot water. Maybe that was a mistake. I stirred the slow cooker every couple of hours. But the result was one I did not feel proud to take to my potluck breakfast event. So I bought a fruit tray from the local grocery store instead. From here on out, I will cook them on the stove so I can tell when they’re done.

Gluten-free and Great Tasting
I love steel cut oats and get gluten-free. I thought I was getting organic steel cut when I ordered and am ok that they are conventional. The previous oats I purchased were the organic ones. I find the conventional cook up a bit creamier for me. I "pre" prepare them by boiling the amount of water for the portion I have (I do 3 tablespoons per serving) and pouring that over the oats and covering the pan. I place the pan on the "turned off" electric burning I heated the water with. I most often do this before noon on the day I am having them at night. Then when I give them their final heat at dinner time, I add a bit more water and have them with my cooked veggies and 2 to 3 oz of protein. One of my favorite meals. A favorite way I enjoy flavoring them is to soak dried mushrooms in the amount of water add to the oats. I add that heated water to my oats as above and add the soaked mushrooms when I have the oats. It's nirvana for me. Really really great tasting.

Excellent quality
Very tasty product and certified gluten free. Five stars and surpassed my expectations by far. The grains are coarser than what I've purchased in stores and cook up firmer. Seems like the store versions I'm used to have a lot of dust in the bag, the grains are smaller, and more processed. Nice, nutty flavor with Bob's. I've cooked it on the stove in water and salt and the taste was delicious. It took 30 minutes start to finish and came out al dente, the way I prefer. I also made it baked in the oven with sliced apples and it didn't get mushy. Good value for the price. I've stored the resealable bags in the freezer to keep them fresh.
