Jacobson Hat Company Men's Adult Deluxe Coolie Hat

I ordered this for my son’s Halloween/cosplay costume and it seems well-made and durable for the price. He had to affix the interior crown to the exterior of the hat with a zip tie, but it fits well and stays put.

As a young boy Wu lived at a monastery with his father and his brother, Garmadon, who was also his best friend. During one of their duels, Garmadon disarmed Wu's katana and accidentally flung it over the monastery walls, since their father would be upset about it, Garmadon asked for Wu to go and retrieve the sword, only for Wu to refuse and get chided by Garmadon for it, saying to Wu "Never put off for tomorrow, what could be done today," before hopping the wall to get back his brother's sword for him. Only for Garmadon to get bitten by The Great Devourer and infect him with its evil. Years later after their father passed away, Wu managed to defeat the self-appointed Lord Garmadon in a battle over The Four Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu. After defeating his brother, Sensei Wu hid each of the weapons and had a dragon of the corresponding element guard each one. Sensei Wu holding the Sword of Fire He then created a map and gave it to a blacksmith who helped him defeat Garmadon to safe guard for him in case he died before the weapons required collecting. Shortly thereafter he started wearing a kick-butt coolie hat. This hat is a true replica of Wu's, right down to the red neck string and center pouch to hold your keepsake photo. It is a very good quality and will stand up to the rigors of a good spinjitzu battle over and over!

In reality, I am giving this 3.8 stars and rounding up for the sake of the review. I don't dislike the item itself at all. It serves it's purpose by blocking A LOT of sun, much more so than any other hat I've used for coverage in the past. The only issue I have with this is that after a week of wearing it, the part that your head sits in stretches and makes it loose and not as well fitting as it initially was. If you use this to protect you during your more laborious chores outside, it gets a bit flimsy and needs to be adjusted to stay straight on your head. I purchased this to help keep the sun off me, and it has done an excellent job in that regards. It gives you full coverage, protecting both the back of your neck and the front of your face. Very little, if any sun gets through the tightly weaved top. It is very lightweight despite it's size and does not make your head sweat at all. The hat itself is well made and is of high quality. It says that it is made of polyester, which doesn't make sense to me but who am I to argue. It appears to be made of thin sections of reed that are shellacked with a protective coating. The interior part that your head sits on (which I mentioned earlier) is made with thinner pieces of straw, similar to a broom. There is a nice cord and adjustable bead to hold it to in place. Again, this does an excellent job of keeping the sun off of you. My only complaint is that after a week of wear the portion that fits your head stretches and makes the hat move a bit too much. That does get old in a hurry when you have to stop what you are doing to adjust the position. With that being said, I do like this hate and for the most part happy.

The hat that I received was wider than a standard sun hat and has a good shape so it actually will protect my face while out working in the yard. It is also very sturdy. I was worried when ordering that I would end up with a flimsy costume hat... this is a good solid work hat though, which is what I wanted. I think one of these days I will even give it some custom paint... *Thank You*

The hat is very sturdy. I imagine the lacquer gives it a lot of added strength although I would have preferred a natural style. These are handmade and they are not going to be 100 perfect and mine was certainly crafted very well. Very happy with this purchase. My only complaint is that the basket that sits on your head is a bit uncomfortable, but if you're not bald like me, it probably won't be a problem. Edit: My first trip out and my hat fell apart. The basket part that sits on your head came off. It's hot glued, and some of the area contained very little glue and did not even make contact with the hat. I'm attempting to super glue it back together but gees, one trip? I would understand if I had banged the hat around. While I still stand firm on it's solid construction, it's really basket that is the issue. Marked it down a star for it's disappointing performance. I will also say this hat did an awesome job of keeping the sun off my face and neck.

The Deluxe Straw Hat is the best straw hat I've ever owned. I'm 67, so over the years I've worn calypso hats, cowboy hats, and sombreros. However, the Deluxe Straw Hat is more effective at keeping the sun off my face. The design shades the face without having a wide circumference on the brim because the sloping brim protects the whole head. When I go on my daily walks, I'm more comfortable and protected from the sun. My only concern when I purchased it was whether or not the straw would be thick and substantial enough to be sturdy. It is and it exceeded my expectations.

I've had a similar hat for many years, until it recently broke and I needed a new one. I searched and settled on this one, thinking I would get a functional, water-resistant hat that had an inner ring for your head and a red rim. A hat that the photos show. Imagine my surprise when all I received was a cheap costume accessory. If that's what you're looking for, good for you and you should buy this. If not, then steer clear.

I purchased this for my trip to the beach earlier this month (June 2015). I wanted something that was durable, had plenty of coverage, and functional. This hat nailed all three of my expectations. I have a large head and broad shoulders so I was initially afraid that it may not fit correctly or look awkward in proportion to my body. It fit really well, setting on the crown of my head. The leather straps made it easy to adjust and stay put. The shade was great. It produced enough to cover my face, neck, most of my shoulders and depending on how I sat, my feet as well. It held up when I went into the water, preventing most wave splashes from penetrating. At the end of the day, I would let it air off, shake off any sand and debris, and get ready for another day. The straps only failed me in winds in excess of 15mph, making it difficult to stay on. The only real down side is that it can catch the wind in the breeze and come off your head if the straps are not adjusted properly.
