There is a discussion of the history and how to carve spoons too but don't buy this book if you want to carve usable spoons. It's not why it was written. It has examples of the most ornate spoons imaginable most of which are absolutely gorgeous but purely decorative. There are some patterns but many of them will only be executable by someone who already has some reasonable carving skills.

As I am a wood carver, I like challenges and trying new ideas. Wow...it really is a history of, and a step by step carving instructional of lovespoons. I recommend it to anyone who likes to carve...they are fun. This book is an excelent book to add to a library of every carvers level and interest of woodart.

From this book, I made my first spoon. Everyone especially me were suprised it how well it came out. Looks very nice. The transition between the beginner spoon and the intermediate spoon pattern is a quantum leap.

It's an inspirational book. I'm a newcomer to carving lovespoons, so for someone like me it's invaluable. It gives me an idea of how far it's possible to go in this craft, because some of the spoons almost beggar belief, with their intricacy and detail. Tools and techniques, beautiful designs and patterns, masses of pictures, some of which are beautiful, some giving detailed instruction - it's got all you need, it seems to me.

My husband bought this as a new starter with love spoons and was extremely impressed. It was very informative and he has already made some impressive examples of spoons (one of which is already hanging on my wall!). Would thoroughly recommend to beginners.
