By 1892, Hattori was manufacturing his own clocks in a factory he called Seikosha, from the words "seiko" meaning "exquisite," "success," or "miniature," and "sha" meaning "house." The company grew and prospered, producing its first wristwatch in 1913 and launching the Seiko brand in 1924. Technological innovation has always been a driving force in the company's history. Key milestones include Seiko's introduction of the world's first quartz watch in 1969, and its successful launch, in 1988, of the Kinetic, the world's first battery-free watch with quartz accuracy. Recognized for its technological excellence, Seiko has provided timekeeping services for the Olympic Games and the World Cup Soccer Championships. Today, the Seiko brand continues to stand for state-of-the-art technology, as well as superior quality and refined design. Great watch, but a few CAVEATs for buyers!
First of all, the Seiko Sports 5 SKZ211K1 is colloquially known as the 'Atlas' or 'Landshark' due to a rotating inner bezel with compass markings. This is a 'gadget' watch, but quite sturdy with superior design elements in the large yellow minute and hour hands, a yellow second hand, Roman numerals at 12-3-6-9, obverse day and date outlined in red, fine knurling around the outer bezel, a larger, beefy crown to rotate the inner bezel, a screw-down crown, 7S36 movement (non-hacking or winding), 20 Bar (200m) water resistance rating (suitable for shallow diving or snorkeling), brush-finished case sides and stainless bracelet with - get this: solid end links! The lume is quite good - not Monster good, but quite good. Charged up at 2000 and face was readable in the dark at 0400.I initially didn't think a resizing was necessary (i have beefy wrists), but decided to remove a link and use the outside pin on the latch. Link removal was a snap by pushing out a split pin, removing the link, then pushing it back in (follow the arrows; what look like screw heads on the pin ends are not - pins are split). Result? A perfect fit.Took the watch for a nice half-hour early morning swim in pool. No leak (one might ponder how watertight the compass bezel crown is, but hey, 20 Bar ratings generally mean swimming should be fine?)All in all, a very nice package. Unlike others, I don't find the compass rotating wildly during wear. Watch has kept quite accurate time so far. Here's what I don't like: Buying watches on Amazon, especially more expensive watches. Why? Because of the four last watch purchases I've made, I've been burned by receiving previously modified, returned, and gray-market watches stripped of original packing documents. The worst offender was Amazon itself, which shipped me a Seiko Monster that had been obviously returned. Fortunately, all docs were there and the watch was fine. Amazon also shipped me an Orient M-Force with no warranty card, no manual, mangled box, and a watch with a bracelet missing links and modified to fit a child's wrist! Another Amazon purchase of a Seiko 'Ice Monster' via the seller 'E Watch Stock' resulted in a great watch with original stickers but missing a Seiko warranty card (the excuse of the seller is that the warranty is through Amazon - if so, why not include the warranty card? we all know why, don't we?). Finally, this watch, purchased from seller 'Dexclusive' arrived missing a warranty card and a case back without the Seiko protective sticker. These are some things to keep in mind if you purchase through gray-market sellers. In some ways, Amazon could be complicit in the enabling of the accumulation and sale of blank Seiko warranty cards (check a large on-line auction site for such sales) - for what purpose? I think we all know, don't we? Anyway, this would not happen through a purchase from a Seiko dealer. We all like a good deal on a watch, and we all know that the chance of getting a bad Seiko is minimal, but just be aware of what is going on when you buy a watch via Amazon from a seller offering warranty via Amazon.BTW, i got a sticker in the box saying 'Register for your warranty now!' Went to the web site, entered my info, clicked 'Register,' and got a 'Warranty is through Amazon, see them'-type message. I really wish more folks who post negative reviews on some of these watches would follow up with warranty repair results.

Almost perfection!
My father owned a couple of Seikos, but I never gave them too much attention, I thought they were average almost boring watches but that's about it. BIG MISTAKE!!! this is probably the best cost-benefit ratio watch I have ever owned, why? it is solid, accurate (-5 sec a day, great for an automatic), resistant (my baby boy got its hands and mouth on it, so you can imagine), very nice looking ( at least $300 more expensive than it actually is and the night view is almost unbelievable)and an over-all weather watch. I am even considering on getting the Orange Monster next, but that's just out of greed, this watch will last for ages I'm sure.Things I would improve? just two: I would love it to be a bit bigger (but that's just me)and the compass crown, its only weakness if you ask me, it is too soft and moves all the time, plus compass is not like the most useful function (GMT would be superb), but this does not bother me that much since is not a vital function.Buttom line, EXCELENT choice if you decide for this baby.

Great watch. Great Price. Great Quality.
Love this watch. Good movement, the kurnling on the outer bezel and crowns looks great. Looks and wears like $600+ watch. I have a handful of watches and a few of them are Seikos including a Stargate and this guy gets more wrist time than any of them. A fantastic daily wear that seems to stand up to the abuses (I'm not very rough of in but it takes it's lickens) I throw at it.If it ever breaks, I will without a doubt pick up another.

Great look and quality
The watch is looking even better in reality. It is like a functional jewelry that is in the same time resistente enough to not pay to much attention on taking care of it. The compas basal can be used but become the easenes to move it needs to be adjusted every time.

Rolex Replacement
I actually bought this watch to replace my Rolex for everyday use. Reached the point where I could not see the silver hands over the silver face of my Rolex easily without reading glasses. After wearing it just about every day for 28 years, I needed something different and I don't have the discretionary income of 30 years ago. I have always been a Seiko 5 fan because it first came out the year I was born, I have a number of Seiko 5 Sportsmatics from the 60's in my collection so I thought I would start there. I saw the land shark with the yellow hands and bought it. Like many Seiko's, the watch feels like more expensive than the actual cost. It is by no means a lightweight watch but it is definitely not a big heavy brick of stainless steel like so many current watches. It has good power reserve - I only need to get it started if I don't wear it for 2 days. If feels good on the wrist and looks good with the work monkey suit or shorts and tee shirt. I have had it for 6 months and no issue with crystal scratches. I do not baby it. The direction crown does turn while wearing as noted in other reviews and I don't buy the fact that it is very water resistant since the direction crown does not screw down. But then again it is the Land Shark. Most importantly, I can tell time again without looking for glasses. I would definitely buy again.

Seiko Landshark BUY IT NOW!
I have a 7.25 inch wrist. The watch seems smaller than what I expected. To give you a point of reference I include a picture of a 48mm case. I was concerned the 42 inch millimeter case might look a little small on my wrist as I can't even get near 40 mm watch it just looks too small on me. Because of the screw down at 4:00 and the compass at 9:00 gives the watch a slightly greater wrist presence. I'm a machinist and different types of finish blasted polished really gives a watch a nice aesthetic. This is my first Seiko and I was really impressed by the bracelets comfortability and just how it sits nicely. large hands easy to read decent loom first time with hardlex glass so the jury is still out on that feature. The bezels edge constantly grabs my attention in a good way. This was one of the best watch purchases I've made in years. Thanks for bringing back a legendary Seiko, knocked it out of the park.
