Order and Dispute: An Introduction to Legal Anthropology (Classics of Law & Society) Paperback – April 17, 2013

Quid Pro has developed a fabulous niche in resuscitating out of print classics, like Llewellyn's The Bramble Bush or Holmes's The Common Law. This is a classic piece on the anthropology of ordered societies, and particularly those that have achieved the order without what we would recognize as modern, liberal, post-Enlightenment law. This should be on the bookshelf of anybody who puzzles over the role of law and rights.

This is a fine text, but when reviewing one takes into consideration the material quality of the book as well. And for $29.99 the binding is simply terrible; it is flabby and the size of the book makes it just impossible to lay it reasonably flat in your hands. The paper quality is simply unfathomable – the edges of the whole book warped instantly after unpacking. I have never bought a book that feels so uncomfortable to hold and to read from. And you could buy a hardback for $29.99!Still, kudos to Quid Pro Books for reviving such an old text; readers are advised to buy the Kindle version if they want to avoid the agonies of the print book.
