Great question! There is no drainage. I didn’t know that when I bought it and that is e one thing I wish that it had! Because it’s smaller, I don’t waste too much sand pouring it out, but I’d much rather have bought one that had a drainage hole.

What do you recommend putting in it for young toddlers to play with, besides water?

I put sand in one side and water in the other, my grand daughter plays for hours mixing and molding the sand with the toys that come with it ! She is 2 1/2 and loves it
