You can mount a camera directly to the SAM, but I recommend purchasing the Star Adventurer Dec Bracket (S20560). The Dec Bracket allows you to mount a camera without it blocking the polar alignment scope. The "mounting plate" (i.e., the Ball Head Adapter) that is shipped with the SAM blocks the scope.

Q: Is the mini not good enough for astrophotography of nebulae and galaxies with a dslr?

The Mini is every bit as good as the standard Star Adventurer for astrophotography. Both models were designed specifically for astrophotography. The only difference is payload capacity. The standard holds 11 pounds while the Mini holds 7 pounds. The Mini is small and more portable, but sacrifices payload capacity for the smaller footprint.

Q: I have a nikon d3500. Do i need a special cable to make these work togerher?

No, you can just put it in Star mode and just let it track. And run all the photography from the camera.

Q: Can this be used to track the Sun for the upcoming solar eclipse in 2024?

This tracker does have a solar tracking rate option over WiFi via the phone App. With a reasonably-accurate daytime polar alignment, it will be possible to keep the sun in the frame of a telephoto lens for the length of the eclipse, though slight adjustments may be needed for framing.
