I wouldn't suggest it. To clean it, just wipe with a cloth and cleaning solution.

Is there only one in the package and are they nontoxic?

Not sure about the non-toxic question, but, yes, one in each package. Sturdy; I have two, each of a different weight, and have dropped many times on a tiled floor, with no damage. Good for physical rehab, which is what I used it for.
