Crashes computer, not user friendly
I’m experienced with scanners, printers, software, and laptops. I’m not at all tech-challenged. This scanner is awful. I’m using it with a dell laptop that is new and fully updated. The first issue I encountered was simply turning it on. Instead of working per instructions, you need to play with different combinations of opening the software first, then plugging in, then turning on, or in different orders. If not done in a certain way, the software doesn’t recognize that the scanner is connected. Then once it recognizes that the scanner is connected, you have to hurdle issues with getting the software to allow a scan to happen. But in case you haven’t become frustrated enough yet, the software will utilize about 90% of your cpu, bogging and crashing your laptop. For frame of reference, I run the full adobe photoshop suite on this laptop and have no issues. That’s a massive suite of programs. So for this silly scanner to hoard working memory on my laptop like this is insane. Assuming you can play with settings enough to get copy utilization low enough to actually scan something, you have to scan one single thing at a time, later combine files if it’s one document, and manually delete each page once done. Then export and save as every time you’d like to start a new scan. The quality is questionable, and because of the above mentioned issues with the scanner software crashing the computer, you cannot use any setting for photo quality. Attempting to scan anything higher than 300dpi immediately causes the computer to crash. I’ve had to force quite and restart the computer dozens of times while using this scanner.I purchased this scanner to digitize a photo’s for my dad’s funeral. I was hoping to use it for scanning important documents and filing family paperwork. I’ve tried trouble shooting several times. I would like to return it, but now I’m outside of the return window. I purchased this a little more than 30 days ago. Because of the difficulties of the last month, it wasn’t on my mind to return it as quickly as I should have. This was a waste of money and caused immense frustration.

Good addition to my desk
The HP Small USB Document & Photo Scanner is a user-friendly and portable device that works effectively for scanning documents and photos, making it a great addition for school or personal use. However, one drawback is that it can sometimes be challenging to get the scanned copies to come out perfectly straight, which may require a little extra attention while aligning the documents. Overall, it’s a reliable option for anyone looking to digitize their important papers and images conveniently.

It's Works BUT...
...there are some issues with it.I truly want to love this scanner. It is the fifth "portable" scanner I've purchased from various sources over the course of the last six months or so, and the first one I'm keeping. I'm not fussy, but I do expect to get what I pay for. Did I with this? It depends on how you look at it, I think. With inflation being what it is, I suppose this is a reasonable price. I bought my first portable scanner way back in 2009 for $100, so the price would actually be good if I felt it did what I needed it to do.NEGATIVE POINTS......This scanner is portable only because it's compact and lightweight BUT in order to use it, it needs to be connected to a computer. No question about it....It cannot be used with a Chromebook (yes, I learned that the hard way), so if that's what you've got, "forgedaboutit", as they say in Brooklyn; it works in Windows and Mac environments ONLY....after each scan, when saving whatever it is you scanned, you have to choose the extension (.jpg, .pdf, etc.) When you are doing photos only in large volume, this is really annoying! It's easy, but it adds time to each scan....even though I used the paper guides on each side of the picture being scanned, the finished scan showed up on the computer just a little bit crooked, necessitating that each photo be cropped. no matter what the size of the original photoPOSITIVE POINTS:...it's lightning fast. I recommend clicking the "Scan" button provided in the software rather than using the Scan button on the unit. Every time I tried to use the button on the unit, I got an "abort" message; this did not happen when I used the button on the computer screen...the pixelation is excellent...I tried scanning several different sized pictures and they all worked. The smallest photo I scanned was 1-1/2" x 3". That's tiny! I haven't gotten to the largest photos yet (8 x 10), but I'll create an update if they don't work.Other things I like about it is the fact that I can easily put it out-of-sight when I'm not using it so that it isn't cluttering up my desk. I'm sure that the more I use it, the quicker I will be able to get the job done! I'm in the process of scanning in every photo I own so that I can give them all to each of my boys on flash drives, along with the "hard copies." I'll be setting up a digital frame to display them in my living room, so hard copies won't be necessary. I do have one hallway wall with pictures on it, too.I have used just about every type of scanner that's been invented! This includes wand scanners, printer scanners, and mouse scanners (my absolute favorite). If there's one I haven't used, it's because I haven't heard of it! I know my way around both scanners. The two scanners I favor above the rest were the VuPoint wand scanners (that's the one that lasted for so long!) and the Halo mouse scanner. Unfortunately, neither are manufactured anymore and it was reconditioned VuPoints that I needed to keep returning. The Halo had a short life span, but it did a magnificent job while it worked...you'd just run the scanner over whatever you wanted to scan (I did pictures as large as 11"x 14") and it stitched them together beautifully. It's too bad they couldn't perfect that one!So...that's my opinion of this scanner, for better or for worse. Like marriage, it's a bit of both :) I hope I've been helpful to you!

Basic usb page scanner small/portable
Easy to use basic color scanner, usb c cable connected easy to use software. Not much to setup, remove the packing materials then plug in the cable and load the software. If the software can't find the scanner reboot (I have windows 11) that solved the problem. Comes with a calibration card if scan quality degrades. Easy instructions, portable.
