Can the head be easily removed from the base to make it lighter to remove in two sections?

I have tried both ways on mine. I have found the easiest and quickest way is to just remove the 4 pins from the base rails and take it out that way. It takes about 3 minutes compared to about 15 minutes removing the head and is not much heavier either after trying it.

I have a Curt Q20 hitch. Is it normal to have a clunking sound while starting and stopping

My hitch does not clunck when starting or stoping. I would go through your jitch and make aure everythi g is tight and torqued to spec. Also, inspect king pin and hitch jaws for wear. Lastly mak sure you are fully engaed before pulling. Hope this helps.
