This oil has left an unpleasant odour like used chip fat on my worktop . . . Is this normal, and how do I get rid of the smell??

This product is really not for worktops I use it on my outdoor furniture however it is food safe so can understand you using it indoors the smell as you say is strong but reminds me of sesame oil used in Chinese cooking have you checked that it didn't become tainted by the application tool or the worktop itself reacting with it -try this wipe it over again with 50/50 tung oil and citrus thinners (D-Limonene) your kitchen should smell of oranges for a while and it will likely clear away the current smell without compromising the protection of the oil already applied also Tung oil applied neat can be greasy and form a film on the wood if applied too thickly where it cant absorb into the wood but even if you do nothing the smell should fade over time. Hope this isnt too long winded and is of use.
