There is a top piece and a back piece to the hook or eye set. The top piece has spikes that go through the garment, then you put the back piece on and fold the spikes down against the back piece. That secures the top piece in place.

You do open the waistband up to insert the inside portion. Most pants have the piece to open up, just be careful when you do it. :)

I wouldn't use this type of fastener, it is too wide and visible for what you need, plus it may make holes in the leotard. You could put a ribbon tie on the skirt and tie it on or use smaller, less visible fasteners to attach it. Try to find smaller, round ones like they put on dress necklines.

I think you're saying you'll remove the button and use this instead.? These will work, however be sure to sew them in correctly and tight so they don't pop off on one side or the other. A small flat bladed screwdriver can help flex the latch up slightly to make it easier to slide into the hasp, but don't bend too much or you could make a loose fit. You have a good idea using these, but they are a tad flimsy, so buy the bigger ones for jeans, especially if he's real active.
